Slow hits: Black & White ~ Jacky Cheung

Respected as the God of Canto-pop of in the 90's and havig stayed relatively low-profile in recent years, Jacky Cheung has put himself in the spotlight again. Besides preparing day-in-day-out for Snow Wolf Lake (Mandarin version) the theatre drama, he has also released the latest Mandarin album Black & White, with 5 brand new songs and 21 favourite picks by Jacky.

Although the 5 new songs in this album are not as sharp and eye-catching as those in Life Is Like A Dream, they are still of much quality. To be frank, the present reviewer does not agree that Jacky is the best singer in the history of Chinese music, but his passionate, forceful and appealing performance does touch and move every one of us. So far, no other singer has achieved what he has.

Black & White Reflection (CD1, Track#1), the first principal track, is beautiful and relaxing. Jacky's singing, especially in handling the high notes, is terric and natural. If I Don't Love You (CD1, Track#5), the theme song of a Korean TV series drama, is another wonderful piece of song.

I Don't Understand (CD1, Track#2) sees Jacky works with Xiao An for the third time since the last two albums. The music and lyrics of the song are good. Forget To Cry (CD1, Track#4), a common ballad, is as worthy of listening to as Sorry (CD1, Track#3).

As for the oldies, those are truly fans' favourites though most of them are not leading tracks then. For example, Coffee (CD1, Track#6), I Am Badly Hurt (CD1, Track#7), She Comes To My Concert (CD1, Track#9), Broken Hearts Leaves No Mark (CD2, Track#8) and Sleepless Night (CD2, Track#1) are all the present reviewer's favourites.

Recommendations: Forget To Cry (CD1, Track#4), Black & White Reflection (CD1, Track#1) and If I Don't Love You (CD1, Track#5)

"Black & White" is definitely a great Mandarin new songs + compilation album. Nice photos. I'm hoping that Jacky will record a Mandarin album in the very near future, similar that he writes and sings all his own songs, but yet somehow different in style to his last (Cantonese) album - "Life is like a dream". It's been a while since Jacky released an album. Eight months to be exact. Anything special for music lovers and his loyal fans on his 20th anniversary? Or do we have to wait until the end of his Mandarin musical - "Snow Wolf Lake" for one? If it is, I hope it's an album with songs previously not recorded in any of his Cantonese or Mandarin albums, eg. "Everyone Looks Forward To A Holiday" ("Eighth Happiness" movie theme song, 1988; "Boundaries Of A Dream" (movie theme song from "Yuppie Fantasia", 1989); "Forever Friends" from "Forever Friends" - PolyGram's Hong Kong and Taiwanese Various Pop Artists compilation album, 1990; "The Truth" (theme song from TVB drama serial (pinyin: "O Ji Shi Lu"), 1996, recorded in the "Queen Arrival 2" album); original (not concert version/s) MVs of "Li Xianglan", and "Sui Yue Liu Qing"; etc.; or "Snow Wolf Lake" (Mandarin version) CD and VCD/DVD.
