High school student Kurosaki Ichigo has never quite fit in thanks to his blonde hair and ability to see spirits. Things get a lot stranger when he crosses paths with Kuchiki Rukia, a shinigami (death god) hunting for a hollow, an evil spirit who must be cleansed in order to enter Soul Society (heaven). During her fight with the hollow, Rukia becomes seriously injured, and in order to save Ichigo, she passes all her powers to him. Ichigo becomes a part-time shinigami, while a weakened Rukia is stuck in the mortal realm (camped out in Ichigo's closet none less), watching over the reckless, but uncommonly gifted teen to make sure he gets the job done.
