１９４２年、ナチスの軍隊がポーランドを侵攻、ユダヤ人の強制連行が始まっていた。１１歳のロメック（ハーレイ・ジョエル・オスメント）は、ユダヤ人狩りを逃れるため、一人、ポーランド東部の小さな村に預けられた。彼を預かった農夫グニチオ（オラフ・ルバスゼンコ）には妻と１２歳のヴラデック（リチャード・バーネル）、弟のトロ（リアム・ヘス）という二人の息子がいた。高圧的な態度をとるヴラデックとは対照的に、トロは好意的にロメックを気づかってくれるのだった。また、村の神父（ウィレム・デフォー）はロメックがユダヤ人であることに気づいていたが、カトリックに偽装することを許していた。村でもユダヤ人差別や不条理な処刑が相次ぐなか、子供たちは美しい自然の中で輝いていた。ケンカをし、友情を深め、淡い恋を経験し・・・。しかし、その日々もナチスの侵攻によって踏みにじられようとしていた。
