YesAsia Editorial Description
Fight choreographer Panna Rittikrai directed this high-octane actioner pitting a group of Olympic-caliber athletes versus a paramilitary gang of drug smugglers. After helping capture the villainous General Yang, city cop Daew (Chupong Changprung) travels with his Tae Kwan Do-practicing sister to a remote rural village. She and her fellow athletes are on a mercy mission, but soon the village is taken hostage by General Yang's evil gang. Their goal: General Yang's freedom. The threat: the slaughter of the entire village, plus a nuke capable of leveling Bangkok! With time running out, it's up to Daew and company to save the day.
Possessing loads of creative action, Born to Fight is a worthy successor to the peerless action spectacle of Ong-Bak. The good guys use whatever skills they have on hand - gymnastics, Tae Kwan Do, football (soccer) skills, Muay Thai - to entertainingly dispense righteous punishment. Even more punishing is the stuntwork, which probably amounted to an insurance nightmare for the filmmakers. People get hit with flaming logs, flung off speeding motorcycles, and knocked off runaway trucks with realistic-looking impact and cinematic flair. For sick stuntwork and over-the-top action thrills, Born to Fight is tough to beat!

During a drug bust that goes horribly wrong, Special Forces police officer Deaw (Dan Chupong) is witness to the brutal murder of his superior office and friend, Major Puntakarn Ritdamrong (Sahaschai Chumrum) on the orders of the General Yang (Noppol Gomarachun), a notorious drug baron. Yang is eventually brought to justice, but Deaw, no longer able to perform his police duties following his friend's death, decides to take time out from the force to accompany his taekwondo champion sister, Nui (Kessarin Ektawatkul), and a team of elite Olympic athletes on a charity visit to a small village situated near the Thai/Burmese border. Shortly after they arrive, the village is overrun and held hostage by an army of guerrillas armed with a nuclear missile and demanding the release of General Yang. With the missile aimed at Bangkok and the clock ticking, it is up to Deaw, his sister and her fellow athletes to use their unique skills in fighting back against the mercenaries before it is to late.

Professional Review of "Born To Fight (Thailand Version) "

From the production team that brought you the film Ong Bak, comes Born To Fight, a tale of athletes, terrorists, guns, Muay Thai, and a small nuclear threat. Whilst not a sequel, Born To Fight does have much the same feel as Ong Bak, making it instantly recognizable to fans. The stunts are similar in that neither wire-work or computer graphics are used, and many of the more impressive stunts are played in slow motion to allow the audience to take it all in. Unfortunately, Born To Fight and Ong Bak share a common problem: the plot. Whilst Ong Bak had a rudimentary yet believable plot, Born To Fight feels as though it was written by a group of prepubescent teenagers all trying to beat each other in game of ?try to come up with the coolest plot device?. It?s actually quite ridiculous as each new plot device is revealed, especially when finally confronted with a nuclear threat from the terrorists. What makes these aspects of the plot ridiculous is that they are never really explained, and seem to exist only to provide justification for many of the fight scenes. Mind you, this isn?t necessarily a bad thing. If you're able to get past the rather thin plot, then you're in for an action-packed treat. As with Ong Bak, Born To Fight involves a great number of fight scenes. However, unlike Ong Bak, the fight scenes combine both traditional Muay Thai and sporting skills. Thus the soccer star spends his time kicking grenades back at terrorists and the rugby player simply ploughs through a group of foes. There are number of sports stars each with a different fighting technique making Born To Fight a far more entertaining action film. As for the stunts, it is difficult to describe just how good they are without reducing their impact. They are just that good. So much so that, just as you reach the end of the film convinced that they must have wires or other special effects for the stunts, the credits roll alongside a series of outtakes detailing what goes into each of the incredible stunts. Some of this footage is painful: for example, we see an actor fall off a moving truck onto the ground and not get up. As a final note, I should warn that this film is incredibly violent, on a par with Ong Bak. However, what sets Born To Fight apart is that some of the violence is of villagers being massacred, which can be quite difficult to watch at times. Overall, Born To Fight is an incredible film. Whilst lacking somewhat in the plot area (making it comparable to many Hollywood films), it certainly delivers on jaw-dropping action and stunts. 8 elbows to the head out of 10 by Mathew Kinghorn - heroic-cinema.com |

As the previous reviewer stated, the action scenes are great and the plot is not all that great. But if you like action, its definitely worth a view. Also note that the DVD is a Region 3 encoded disk, meaning it will not play on US players, you'll need a regionless player for it to work. I tried to play it on 3 US players and all of them locked out the DVD. Only after I took out my regionless, did it play. |

Movie Was So-So...
| If you're looking for a movie with AWESOME fight scenes, this is a GREAT movie to check out. There's a guy who uses a bamboo woven ball like it's a third leg, and speaking of legs, there's a guy with only ONE leg and a crutch who uses this ball even better! The main characters have different and unique fighting styles. The Muy Thai is SOOO amazing and the little gymnast guy is also exceptional. If you're looking to find a movie with a good story, FORGET IT! It's weird, makes NO sense, and this movie is just what it's named for...the point is in the fighting and NOT for a good storyline/plot. Check it out...the fight scenes make up for the weird story. |
