With a name that intentionally resembles a boxer's ringname,
Detroit Metal City director Lee Toshio seems destined at birth to direct a boxing film. Now, he gets his chance with
Box!, the film adaptation of the popular Hyakuda Naoki coming-of-age novel set in a high school boxing club. Lee demanded that stars Ichihara Hayato (
Rookies) and Kora Kengo (
Solanin) train under former boxing champion Tabata Nobuyuki in order to perform their boxing scenes without any stuntman. The strict training regiment might've resulted in a few bruised faces, but it also lent much-needed authenticity to the film. In addition to featuring Kashii Yu (
Death Note) and Tanimura Mitsuki (
God's Puzzle) as co-stars,
Box! also marks the final film for actress Hosho Mai (
Suicide Club), who retired from show business after the film's theatrical release.
Talented young boxer Cub (Ichihara Hayato) senses that honor student Yuki (Kora Kengo) has the potential to be a boxer and convinces him to join their high school's boxing club. A victim of bullying, Yuki is motivated to train hard and becomes good friends with Cub in the process. However, in the boxing world, the sole path to victory is to knock down any opponent in the way, even if that opponent happens to be your best friend.
