Breath of Fresh Air!
After 3 years, Rina Chinen has finally released her second new album, Breath. (This is actually her 3rd album. After her debut, "Growing", she released "Passage" which was a greatest hits disc.) This new album represents a change in style for Rina, whose first songs had her featuring a higher pitched voice, and a bit of a cutesy style. Casting off the pure pop roots, Rina turns towards a more R&B inspired style, and shows a lot of substance with her 2nd album, filled with some great danceable grooves. This album really relies on Rina's voice to carry it through, and it she is definitely up to the task. Favorite tracks on the album include: Track 8: Love You Close 4:40 My favorite of the 3 singles released before the album came out. This was the ending theme to the new Doraemon movie. A really, really nice love song. The way the drum machine kicks in as the chorus starts gives a nice feel to the track, and Rina sounds amazing during long vocal stretches of the track. Track 11: Control 4:02 This track sort of sounds like you'd hear in it a game of Puzzle Bobble. (Bust-A-Move in the States.) Lots of bubble popping samples and electric organ form the framework of this track. I think these are the tracks that suit Rina Chinen best. She can use her cute voice, and its set against a light, but peppy backbeat. One of the best track on this album. Track 2: Butterfly 3:47 At the point at which you listen to this track, you start thinking to yourself, if the rest of the album is like this, I'm in for a huge treat. Well, you're in luck, because most of the rest of the album is at or above this level of quality. I can't help but think this is yet another track related to Rina's love of flying. She's often said that if she wasn't a singer, she'd like to be a pilot. Infectious grooves line this track, the tempo shift as the chrous begins is really cool. Track 15: Tom 6:56 The longest track, it's a peppy ballad to finish off the album. Another track that really shows off Rina's voice. Really, polished, everything just fits together well to make this song a winner. Track 14: Rendez-vous 4:14 A little bit techno, a little bit trance, and a little bit pop. This track's pretty quick. This track probably has my favorite chorus sequences on the album. Another solid track on this album. Track 13: Just Believe 4:28 The best example of the change Rina's change from her last album to this one. Full R&B sounding beats, and in the PV she does what most of the artists in Japan can't do...dance. Probably my favorite track on the album. I dig the stop and start bass and hi-hat. I can recommend buying this album to any fan of JPop. It's better than the big star releases of this year, Hamasaki Ayumi's "A Best", Utada Hikaru's "Distance", and Kuraki Mai's "Perfect Crime". Add to that the fact that Rina Chinen is damn cute, and you've got a nearly perfect mix.

ONE FINE BREATH
I was much attracted by the number of songs included in the album, and that certainly became one of the main reasons I bought it. Although I had got two of the singles before the album, I am still satisfied with "breath". The two singles "Just Believe" and "Love you close" have been two of my favourite songs. The former one is a mild dance/pop number, while "Love you close" is a romantic ballad. "breath" makes Rina more like a lady in comparison with her previous albums "Growing" and "Passage". Instead of girlish rock songs, this album features more upbeat/pop sound and sweet music. Every song is up to standard, and that makes it difficult for me to select one or two of them as recommendation. But if I have to choose, "Taion" (track 6) and "control" (track 11) would be two appropriate choices. Oddly enough, though "CLUB ZIPANGU" (which is a cover of Ricky Martin's "She Bangs") does not match the style of "breath", I personally think it has successfully given the album a beautiful ending. Additionally, the pictures are great. I especially like the album jacket 'coz it gives me a feeling of watercolour. The production of "breath" is simply clever, so why don't you give it a try?

yeah, she is definitely the best artist i have ever had the privilege to listen to. i bought this album as soon as it came out and have not been disappointed. rina chinen's very powerful, clean vocals are present in this cd as they are in everything she releases. her vocals are a powerhouse of sound and yet she has a high, soprano-like voice. the songs are of a slow, r&b/pop style which is typically not my favorite genre (i much prefer rina's debut styles of idolish-pop and ROCK that followed) but due to the fact that she is such a great vocalist, i enjoyed each and every one of the songs very thoroughly. even parts of the songs in which the music was a little too r&b for me, rina's excellent and clear voice held up the song by singing and carrying on the melody while perhaps the musical accompanyment became r&b rhythms. utada hikaru can't do this and so i think that rina could skyrocket to fame if people just gave the cd a chance. bottom line, excellent singer, cool songs, and she began to write her own lyrics!! she wrote the lyrics for the first song and song 15. now if that ain't cool, i don't know what is. she is an excellent vocalist (both on the cd and IN CONCERT [that's her REAL voice] and now she is writing her own lyrics. take a look at this cd and be sure to check out her first cd [growing] which i would recommend to ANYONE.

This is the product of many years of Rina's musical maturation. She is a wonderful singer and the vocals and lyrics reflect this time she has spent trying to figure out what she likes to sing. If you have been following her musical career, you will realize that her songs have changed constantly in style from pop to rock-pop to R&B. This album is a grab bag of each. Regardless of what she does, she does it perfectly. I have decided that she is definitely my favorite singer after purchasing this album. It's excellent and there is variety in this excellence. I really enjoyed it and think you will, too.
