Brian's Song tells the true story of pro football players Brian Piccolo and Gale Sayers, tracing their relationship from an intense rivalry to a warm friendship that helps sustain Brian as he battles valiantly against cancer. College all-star Gale Sayers (Mekhi Phifer) joins the 1960s-era Chicago Bears, where he challenges Brian (Sean Maher) for the running back position. Though the immensely talented Sayers wins the spot, his aloof demeanor alienates his teammates. Realizing Gale is simply shy, Brian strives to make friends. When he agrees to room with the black athlete on the road, both men are the targets of a considerable amount of racially motivated vitriol. Gradually they become friends, and even socialize together with their wives, Joy Piccolo (Paula Cale) and Linda Sayers (Elise Neal). When Brian's weakness and coughing fits are diagnosed as a rare form of cancer, Gale and Linda provide constant support as Brian battles for his very survival.
