YesAsia Editorial Description
The hilarious sequel to the 1989 hit The Yuppie Fantasia, Brief Encounter in Shinjuku brings back Lawrence Cheng as a thirty-something Hong Kong yuppie finding misadventures in love and marriage. Leung Foon (Lawrence Cheng) and Ann (Carol "Dodo" Cheng) reunite after the events of The Yuppie Fantasia, but issues still exist. Ann works overtime to be a better wife, and Leung Foon attempts mightily to be a model, upright husband. But being perfect spouses can take its toll, and soon the possibility of infidelity arises for both of them. For Leung Foon, the temptation comes in the form of new office colleague Dream Kwan (Rosamund Kwan), who's got the entire office abuzz with her stunning beauty. Will Ann and Leung Foon decide once and for all that marriage is not for them? Director Gordon Chan brings wry observations and light-hearted comedy to Brief Encounter in Shinjuku, a modern comedy that easily matches, and possibly even surpasses its predecessor!

Worthy follow-up to "Yuppie Fantasia"
|
"Brief Encounter in Shinjuku" is something of a sequel to "The Yuppie Fantasia"; Leung Foon (Lawrence Cheng) and Ann (Carol Cheng) return and their marriage remains in trouble. However, almost all of the people around them have changed and Ann's career, which was such an important part of "Yuppie" seems to have evaporated. At the film's outset, Leung Foon and Ann are estranged. Leung Foon yearns to get his marriage back, but Ann clearly isn't on the same page. Leung Foon's persistence and apparent sincerity, however, carry the day and soon Ann is back in Leung Foon's arms and talking about having babies. Leung Foon has a new secretary to assist him in his work, the lovely Wendy Wan (Rosamund Kwan). Wendy is engaged to a dentist who clearly is enthralled with her; Wendy, however, is unable to reciprocate his feelings. Instead, she appreciates Leung Foon's kindness to her. Leung Foon clearly enjoys working with Wendy, but his relationship with her remains strictly professional. But then Leung Foon and Wendy must travel together to Tokyo to make a presentation and their amicable working relationship begins to turn more intimate. Will Leung Foon's wandering eye cost him his marriage? Will Wendy throw away her engagement for an affair with the nebbishy Leung Foon? Watch "Brief Encounter in Shinjuku" to find out. Lawrence Cheng, Carol Cheng, and Rosamund Kwan all deliver solid performances; I was particularly struck with the subtlety of the emotions that Rosamund was able to depict. (Of course, I'd be 'particularly struck' by film of Rosamund reading the phonebook. I'll admit it; I'm smitten.) The story is a bit uneven, particularly in its involvement of minor characters that don't add much, but its central theme is well-told, honest, and involving. Recommended. |

The Yuppie Fantasia II: Brief Encounter in Shinjuk

This film sequel produced in 1990, has Lawrence Cheng, Carol Cheng, Rosamund Kwan, Manfred Wong, Chow Mei-fung, Peter Lai and Tsang Kong. It's just as good as the original. |
