Korea's biggest TV hit of 2009, SBS drama Brilliant Legacy (a.k.a. Shining Inheritance) spun a Cinderella tale of family feud and sweet romance into ratings gold. Closing at over 30% average viewership ratings, the heartwarming drama draws both laughter and tears with the budding romance between a stubborn couple who start out as bickering rivals, and end up falling for each other. Starlet Han Hyo Ju (Iljimae) charms as the modern-day Cinderella, a young woman who loses her family and fortune, but stays true to her self. Pop idol Lee Seung Gi (Famous Princesses), meanwhile, experienced a huge surge in popularity for his turn as the brash and inconsiderate rich kid who slowly changes after meeting the heroine. Moon Chae Won (The Painter of the Wind) and Bae Soo Bin (Jumong) also make their breakthroughs playing the protagonists' admirers.

Back in Korea from studying abroad, spunky get-goer Eun Sung (Han Hyo Ju) goes from riches to rags when her father suddenly passes away. She never gets the chance to see her father for the last time and even loses her autistic brother (Yun Joon Suk) - all because of her stepmother's (Kim Mi Sook) treachery and the unwitting meddling of arrogant restaurant heir Hwan (Lee Seung Gi). As fate would have it, Eun Sung ends up saving Hwan's grandmother (Ban Hyo Jung) by chance. Touched by Eun Sung's kind heart and hardworking nature, Hwan's grandmother not only decides to take her in, she names Eun Sung her heir!

Shining Romance
On paper, Brilliant Legacy is a summation of K-Drama cliches: a pure-hearted riches-to-rag heroine gets bullied by her evil stepmother after her father's death, and then falls into love and rivalry with an arrogant heir. There's also a fake death, missing brother, backstabbing stepsister, and romantic triangle in the mix for more soap opera value. Storywise Brilliant Legacy is indeed been there done that, but how that familiar story plays out on screen feels fresh and engaging, with many cute romantic moments to make fans happy.

Much of Brilliant Legacy's brilliance lies in the cast and chemistry. Starring in his first TV drama in three years, singer Lee Seung Gi plays the conceited and inconsiderate rich guy who gets reformed by love. Lee's straightforward acting style and real-life boy-next-door image and looks work in his favor for the drama, making it easy to root for his roguish character - even with the charming appearance of Bae Soo Bin as that perfect guy K-Drama heroines always pass over for the bad boys. Han Hyo Ju is natural and adorable in the role of the stubborn, soft-hearted Cinderella, and she has great romantic chemistry with Lee.

Han Hyo Ju drops plenty of tears in Brilliant Legacy, but despite all the K-Drama tropes, the series never goes overboard into super melodrama territory. The family lessons about self-sufficiency and striving to run an employee-friendly restaurant chain are refreshingly positive, as are most of the characters in the drama. There are bad guys, but none so reprehensible that they become melodrama caricatures. Moon Chae Won inspires more empathy than loathing as the lovesick stepsister who does wrong despite herself, and even Kim Mi Sook's evil stepmother isn't that terrible in the greater scheme of K-Drama antagonists. Brilliant Legacy keeps a fairly heartwarming core and sprinkles many light moments in with the angsty romance and inheritance battle so that it's easy to watch and enjoy.

In many ways, the ratings say it all. Brilliant Legacy's finale holds the record so far for this year's highest-rated episode. If the first quarter of the year was all about Boys Over Flower, then spring and summer definitely belonged to Brilliant Legacy. There are no Korean Wave stars or big-budget concepts to sell, just a shining romance, and yet Brilliant Legacy will close the year as one of the top three K-Dramas of 2009.

i watch this when it came out i was so in love with it except of course the step mother and sister is too witchy..but over all i love it and love seunggi oppa!

This series sorta on and off caught my attention. It took me 5 months to finish it, while I took less than half that time to finish other much longer series, so that really says something about my interest in it. At times I found it too predictable and quite often characters would argue over the same things after saying they'd leave it in the past and such. Wasn't my cup of tea. It's not a series I'd recommend.

I liked the first half of the drama but it got extremely slow towards the end. Usually I don't mind slow dramas because the ending makes up for it, but this ended up just being mediocre.

Great story!! Not your usual drama set up, takes a few episodes to know where its actually going. They couldn't have picked better actors for these roles. Han Hyo Ju is AMAZING, as well as Lee Seung Gi.

I highly recommend this series to everyone.

Thoughtful script shines brilliantly Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Even the best actors in the world need intelligent lines and genuine emotions to show case their talents. And that's what the play write has accomplished in this surprisingly fresh and touching drama. I especially admire the courage to take on some not so light-hearted themes such as values (spanning from personal, family, corporation, to society), heritage, responsibility, and obligations.

Of course star power is what made those treatments so easy to swallow. Lee Seung Gi is wonderfully low-keyed in his portrayal of a boy reluctantly growing into a man. Han Hyo Ju is in every way his equal. Watch the two cross swords and sparks fly! The grandmother and stepmother are the yang and yin of gravity that anchor the show. All in all, a most enjoyable view experience.
