Brothers Five (Hong Kong Version)

YesAsia Editorial Description

Cheng Pei Pei is known to many Chinese movie fans as the villainous Jade Fox in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon directed by Ang Lee. More avid fans probably also recognize her as the Golden Swallow in King Hu's canonized Come Drink with Me made in 1966, after which Cheng Pei Pei starred as various persistent and pretty martial arts experts in Shaw Brother films. In Brothers Five, she stars as a martial expert who sets out to find the five sons of her late father's best friend. She needs to inform them, separated from each other ever since their family members were murdered, about the real villain behind their family's tragedy. She also needs to return to them a martial arts manual which has been under her custody for years, so that the five brothers can take revenge on the evil but powerful murderer.

After making Brothers Five in 1970, director Lo Wei later earned greater reputation by directing Bruce Lee's Fist of Fury. Nieh Kuang, Hong Kong's most famous sci-fi writer, wrote the script for this wonderful piece.

導演:羅維
Director: Lo Wei

Years before he was to become famous for directing Bruce Lee in Fist Of Fury and Jackie Chan in New Fist Of Fury, Lo Wei teamed with superstar swordswoman Cheng Pei-pei (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) for this action thriller of brotherly love…and death. She stars as Yen Lai, the one woman who can reunite the Kao brothers to rid the Teng Lung Manor of killers -- as well as take revenge for their father's murder.

Lots of starpower and martial arts madness Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Director Lo Wei's "Brothers Five", a formulaic revenge flick, uses a rather thin plot as an excuse to string together one spectacular fight scene after another. The film's cast, loaded with big name stars, makes this film well worth watching. Cheng Pei Pei plays the daughter of a man murdered by the supreme bad guy (Tien Feng) who now rules the roost at Teng Lung Manor. Before he was killed, Cheng Pei Pei's father had been entrusted with the five sons of the former master of Teng Lung Manor, who also was killed by Tien Feng. The five sons were scattered, growing up as orphans without any knowledge that they had brothers. Now Cheng Pei Pei is on a mission to reunite the five brothers and take back Teng Lung Manor. Each of the five brothers is introduced in turn by means of a fight sequence, where we get to see them display their unique martial arts skills. Most memorable of the brothers are the young scholar played by Chang Yi (everyone laughs at his overly formal manner of speaking) and a Robin Hood-like thief played by Lo Lieh (who steals every scene with sheer gusto). Once the brothers are reunited, they practice a technique that Cheng Pei Pei assures them is the only means of defeating ultra-baddie Tien Feng; it is one of those absurd formations in which the brothers pile on top of each other to form one big unwieldy mound of martial arts mayhem. Once they've mastered that technique, they head off for the big showdown. Will good prevail over evil? Watch "Brothers Five" to find out. And keep your eyes peeled for Sammo Hung in a small role.
