YesAsia Editorial Description
China's Sixth Generation female director Li Yu has won accolades in Pusan, Venice, and Berlin for her past works like Dam Street (2005) and Lost in Beijing (2007). Her latest piece of celluloid art Buddha Mountain sees her reuniting with Lost in Beijing star Fan Bingbing, who gives a powerful performance opposite popular Taiwan actor Wilson Chen Bo Lin and Sylvia Chang, a veteran actress whose tremendous screen presence has been missed for years. Exploring themes of youth dreams and growing pains, the heartfelt human drama has garnered wide critical approval, winning the Best Actress (for Fan Bingbing) and Best Artistic Contribution awards at the Tokyo International Film Festival, and a nomination for Best Actress (for Sylvia Chang) at the Golden Horse Awards.
Chengdu, Sichuan. Rebellious pub singer Nanfeng (Fan Bingbing) leaves her family to pursue a free and independent life. Together with her friends Ding Bo (Wilson Chen) and Soap (Fei Long), they rent rooms from Chang Yueqin (Sylvia Chang), a retired Peking Opera performer. Friction arises between the trio and the landlady, until the carefree youngsters realize that their landlady has been in deep grief over the tragic death of her only son. As they gradually get to know each other, and their constant clash turns into mutual caring, an unexpected event would give them a new understanding of the meaning of love, life, and loss.

Good Movie
|
Personally, I didn't expect anything "great" from Fan Bing Bing before watching this movie but I was in a big surprise. She completely transformed herself with her looks and her actings. If I am not mistaken, she won the "best actress" award for her role in Buddha Mountain and indeed she's deserved it. Wilson Chen and Sylvia Chang did a good job as well but looks like Fan Bing BIng stole this show. The movie must be heavily edited because I still could not understand how Sylvia Chang could "forgive" the young girl whom I assume is responsible for her son's accident/death. Near the end of the movie, we could see her joining Sylvia and "the trio" on a night out but there is no explanation at all how she could amend her "problems" with the mother (i.e. Sylvia Chang)! |

A gloomy and uninteresting movie. Many tedious shots, thus prolonging an already insufferable showing. Sylvia Chang, once my favorite actress, now looks awfully withered, a far cry from her first movie by Ann Hui. Maybe the script demands it. But sad to see that. The rest of the cast not exciting. Fan who has appeared in so many inferior movie lately is getting boring. Any more good and interesting Chinese movies being made?? |
