YesAsia Editorial Description

China's Sixth Generation female director Li Yu has won accolades in Pusan, Venice, and Berlin for her past works like Dam Street (2005) and Lost in Beijing (2007). Her latest piece of celluloid art Buddha Mountain sees her reuniting with Lost in Beijing star Fan Bingbing, who gives a powerful performance opposite popular Taiwan actor Wilson Chen Bo Lin and Sylvia Chang, a veteran actress whose tremendous screen presence has been missed for years. Exploring themes of youth dreams and growing pains, the heartfelt human drama has garnered wide critical approval, winning the Best Actress (for Fan Bingbing) and Best Artistic Contribution awards at the Tokyo International Film Festival, and a nomination for Best Actress (for Sylvia Chang) at the Golden Horse Awards.

Chengdu, Sichuan. Rebellious pub singer Nanfeng (Fan Bingbing) leaves her family to pursue a free and independent life. Together with her friends Ding Bo (Wilson Chen) and Soap (Fei Long), they rent rooms from Chang Yueqin (Sylvia Chang), a retired Peking Opera performer. Friction arises between the trio and the landlady, until the carefree youngsters realize that their landlady has been in deep grief over the tragic death of her only son. As they gradually get to know each other, and their constant clash turns into mutual caring, an unexpected event would give them a new understanding of the meaning of love, life, and loss.

This edition comes with the China theatrical version of the film.

It's the journey that matters
Though not as socially poignant or coherent as Lost in Beijing, director Li Yu's latest film Buddha Mountain is oddly captivating for portraying the meandering days of youth in a thoroughly meandering, and eventually meaningful way. Lost in Beijing heroine Fan Bingbing, Wilson Chen, and Fei Long are the rebels without a cause of the film, three twentysomething drifters with not much to their name but friendship. Their unstable income, headstrong personalities, and seemingly aimless lives basically make them the poster children of the post-80s generation, and put them at odds with their cranky, grieving, middle-aged landlord, gracefully embodied by Sylvia Chang. The clash between young and old under the same roof keeps the story zippy for a while as they eventually change for the better by opening up to each other and embarking on trips together.

One's tolerance for trains - and all the possible meanings and imagery that can be culled from them - may make or break this film for many viewers, because the railroad is practically Fan Bingbing, Wilson Chen, and Fei Long's playground in Buddha Mountain. The three friends spend a lot of time milling around the tracks and joyriding on open-top freight trains. There's in particular one train ride which lasts close to five minutes, a continuous shot of the leads whizzing down the tracks, wind blowing through hair. It's the kind of romanticized imagery that movie cliches are made of, but does effectively creative a mood of brooding freedom.

What makes Buddha Mountain a particularly curious and memorable film is that it touches on more than youth unrest, generation gap, and evolving relationships, venturing into ambiguous discourse about Buddhist theology, mortality, and memories of the Sichuan earthquake. The train brings the protagonists into the mountains where they help rebuild a temple leveled during the earthquake. While the parallel between rebuilding the temple and rebuilding the heart is clear, the film's resolution is anything but, with one of the protagonists making an unexpected decision amid the sweeping mountain vista.

During the Q&A after the Hong Kong Film Festival screening of Buddha Mountain, Sylvia Chang observed that the title refers to the name of a train station, and poetically likened the train ride to life. Though the four protagonists may all get on at the same stop, it doesn't mean they'll all get off at the same stop; what matters is the journey, the time spent together. Looking at the film as a shared moment in time in the characters' journeys may be the best way to approach and appreciate Buddha Mountain's loose story, tight relationships, and love affair with the train. Though the characters may seem incomplete because of the fragmented narrative, the way they form makeshift families and hurt and seek solace from each other is genuinely affecting, as is the film's quietly disquieting final act.

As a train ride, Buddha Mountain has its ups, downs, and turns, not all of which are effective, but the window view is beautiful and the overall journey is well worth the time.

Good Movie Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
Personally, I didn't expect anything "great" from Fan Bing Bing before watching this movie but I was in a big surprise. She completely transformed herself with her looks and her actings. If I am not mistaken, she won the "best actress" award for her role in Buddha Mountain and indeed she's deserved it. Wilson Chen and Sylvia Chang did a good job as well but looks like Fan Bing BIng stole this show.

The movie must be heavily edited because I still could not understand how Sylvia Chang could "forgive" the young girl whom I assume is responsible for her son's accident/death. Near the end of the movie, we could see her joining Sylvia and "the trio" on a night out but there is no explanation at all how she could amend her "problems" with the mother (i.e. Sylvia Chang)!

Senseless Customer Review Rated Bad 2 - 2 out of 10
A gloomy and uninteresting movie. Many tedious shots, thus prolonging an already insufferable showing.

Sylvia Chang, once my favorite actress, now looks awfully withered, a far cry from her first movie by Ann Hui. Maybe the script demands it. But sad to see that.

The rest of the cast not exciting. Fan who has appeared in so many inferior movie lately is getting boring.

Any more good and interesting Chinese movies being made??
