YesAsia Editorial Description
Francis Ng (The Mission) delivers a powerhouse performance in Bullets Over Summer, an acclaimed cop film with intriguing characters and potent, unexpected drama. Officer Mike (Francis Ng) is a temperamental cop assigned to a routine stakeout with partner Yan (rising superstar Louis Koo). Their quarry is a group of vicious thieves, but Mike and Yan have to deal with the more mundane tasks of police investigation first, like obtaining a proper stakeout location. They select the apartment of a senile old woman (Luo Lan, in an award-winning performance), and in between routine surveillance, get to know the old woman and their various neighbors. Everyday life and precious personal connections get made in the line of duty, and the isolation of a being a cop seems to fade. But when the job intrudes, sudden lines are drawn, and Mike makes surprising, shocking choices to protect the people he's come to care about.
Bullets Over Summer earned veteran actress Luo Lan multiple Best Actress Awards, including statues at the 19th Annual Hong Kong Film Awards and the 6th Annual HK Film Critics Society, which also saw Francis Ng win Best Actor. Director Wilson Yip takes great care to create a subtle, character-driven cop film with surprising characters and moments of deliberate, sudden violence. A unique Hong Kong fusion of action, drama, and distinctly human characters, Bullets Over Summer entertains and affects like few films of its type have.

Not your typical cop movie
|
Compared with the explosive Chinese title that literally means "Cracked Cops", the more poetic-sounding English title Bullets Over Summer may be a better match for Wilson Yip's 1999 film, which ably mixes ingredients of romance, comedy, action, and thriller with the character-driven drama for a real winner. In typical buddy cop movie fashion, this movie stars the great Francis Ng and Louis Koo as a pair of cops of contrasting styles and personalities who often clash but complement each other perfectly, as exemplified in the convenience store robbery sequence that opens the film. Koo's Brian is the laidback, wisecracking rookie that seems more interested in wooing women, but is still dashing and daring enough when it comes to carrying out his job. Ng plays it straight in his portrayal of the senior officer Mike, who is calm, serious, and quick-witted, but sometimes a little too hot-tempered in his crime-fighting approach. When the duo is assigned the duty of nailing a suspected arms dealer for a gang of cold-blooded robbers, they have to set up a surveillance spot in an apartment in the opposite building, where an old woman lives alone. She agrees to share the house with them. It turns out that she suffers from dementia and mistakes the new tenants for her long-lost grandsons. Veteran actress Helena Law Lan turns in a nuanced performance as the cranky yet adorable old lady that is hilarious and heartbreaking (often at the same time), and that earned her several Hong Kong film award acting accolades that year. As soon as the surveillance begins, two other women enter the cops' lives. Brian is attracted to Yen (played by Singapore actress Michelle Saram), a fun-loving schoolgirl who sleeps anywhere she can. Meanwhile, Mike sympathizes with Yuan (Malaysian beauty queen Stephenie Lin), a pregnant woman running a laundromat whose cell phone contact list has only two entries: (1) mother, (2) company. He offers to help raise her child, even though they barely know each other. Their budding romance lends emotional weight to the film. Just as these lonely souls begin to bond together and a three-generation family is taking shape, things take a dramatic turn. The cops come head-to-head with the vicious criminal gang. Their encounter over the farewell dinner at old granny's home is filled with tension, and that leads to a film conclusion that is rather unexpected, but certainly reasonable. A trio of supporting roles adds spice to the cast. Fan-favorite character actor Wayne Lai plays the informant that points the way for Mike and Brian, and hunky actor Kenny Wong plays one of the robbers. They are always delightful to watch. Former Shaw Brothers kung fu star Lo Meng is the suspect that our protagonists watch over, and the scene where one of the cops sneaks into his house is a highlight of the film. Director/co-screenwriter Wilson Yip had shown his great ability juggling different genres in his previous films such as the laugh-out-loud riot Teaching Sucks (1997) and the cult zom-com Bio Zombie (1998). Winning critical acclaim and multiple awards, Bullets Over Summer was the film that opened more doors for him, resulting in an illustrious filmography that is still going strong. |
