    November 9, 2003 OUTSTANDING!!! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Being a serious Shiina Ringo fan for ages, I was very pleased with this short film, released at the same time as the single STEM. Hyaku Iro Megane, which basically means "hundred color glasses" in Japanese, is a story with no tangible beginning or end, so you're never really sure just what you're watching. It's about a man, a rather dorky detective, and the friendship that ensues for a short period of time between him and the actress he's supposed to be investigating. She bears incredible hospitality towards him, inviting him to eat with her every day and see plays and movies as well. However, at night, a mysterious geisha-like woman (played by Ringo) can be seen from a knothole when he comes to spy every night. Each time, the same exact ritual occurs, until he takes something from her discreetly, and she seems to know the truth. Everything amounts to a climax quickly, where he finally confronts the woman of the night-the actress' true identity or not...what is her name...has it all been a dream. No doubt, the viewer will be stumped after the film resolves and tries to understand what really happened. Not recommended to non-heavy thinkers. I picked up on themes of the Japanese female stereotype, as well as making our own lives bearable to live. If you don't have the single STEM I would strongly recommend this, because the music, and the words will help clarify the true meaning of the film. I loved it.

November 9, 2003 "i did it my way" Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Jeez this was a great film to watch. I would recommend this to most anybody. It's a story about yentowns in yentown (you'll get it later). In the story, a nameless girl is taken under the wing of Glico, a hooker from Shanghai played by CHARA. You see how Glico and her posse live their lives as hated immigrants in Japan, who will do anything to make a buck, I mean yen. In fact, much of it is quite hilarious. Like a Japanese mafia guy gets punched out of a window, and when they call an ambulance a garbage truck slowly runs over him, totally killing him. It sounds awful now, but when you watch it, it's just really funny. Later when they go to dispose of the body, they discover an audio tape with Frank Sinatra's "My Way" on it. The story is very long, but I never lost my interest. The characters are very real, but also pretty amusing. In other parts it makes you shudder, like the Opium Street scene, where you witness a small community of homeless, starving drug addicts of all sizes and ages, shivering in an alley. Some parts will make you cry, but I won't tell you which ones. Through and through it is very entertaining, it has everything to offer. One warning however, this film is extremely graphic. There's a lot of ultra violence, sex, nudity, swearing, and just things that will make you feel sick (like the retrieval of the MY WAY tape). I feel that all of it was necessary, however. The story gives you *a lot* of ideas to ponder, and it will move you deeply. It affected me in a very strong way.

  • November 9, 2003 beware casual j-pop rock fans Customer Review Rated Bad 5 - 5 out of 10
I want to write this review as honestly as possible, casting aside my Gackt fanclub membership and my obsession with him.
So far all the reviews of this film have honored it with five stars. They call the plot moving and filled with deep thought. They laughed and cried.
If you are like me, and enjoy watching real Japanese cinema, and no, ANIME doesn't count you crazy otaku, you will find the film less than pleasing.
Let's face it, Gackt and HYDE are not good actors. Especially HYDE, in his role as a vampire, playing it up just like he would back in his l'arc en ciel days. Most of the film is derived from an idea of "hey look how cool, dark, and macho we are!" outlook. Gackt does a lot of overacting, and the transitions from his character as young boy to a young man to a mafia crime boss just isn't convincing. I think he just wants to look cool.
MOON CHILD is a brain child from the mind of Gackt, an idea he has toyed around with, in not only the film, but an album, and two live tours as well. It's very typical of a visual kei-type so any superficial goth will like it, and any fangirl/fanboy will love it too.
That's why I can't give it much of a high opinion.
On the other hand, if I were to rate this as a loving Gackt fan, one of his eternal dears, I would give this baby six stars-for being totally worthy of drooling mouths.
