Drama...Horror...Hilarious Comedy! Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
For an Asia horror film fusing drama and comedy into a successful whole, “Rahtree: Flower of the Night” fulfills this odd genre mix exceptionally well. Beginning with moody emotional introduction, Dunrongsgup a male student falls in love with pretty but strangely remote Rahtree. These two students slowly faze into friendship and quickly into sexual liaison, leaving Rahtree pregnant. Dungrongsgup exploits his sexual encounter to friends, but when revealing Rahtree’s pregnancy to his parents, gets quickly sent off to England to study. With Rahtree also sexually abused by her own father, its not a pretty picture. Rahtree has an abortion and afterward left in an apartment block to recover, with Dungronsgsup telling Rahtree he’ll return after his study. Drama and sad romance soon turn to horror when the local apartment block community, including two large lady hairdressers and two shop sellers, hear Rahtree as been found dead in her apartment room, having bled to death due to a botched abortion surgery. The locals attempt to move Rahtree’s shrouded body, but to their horror the shroud comes to life refusing to let anyone near. In fact anyone entering Rahtree’s room 609 (the naught missing, showing only a 69!) gets the pants scared off them. A ghost!

Sounds’ chilling doesn’t it. But the local community desperately trying to rid the new ghost on the block are very funny. The natural half-wit locals are hilariously portrayed (Dave and the lady hairdressers are a scream!) without ridiculing the horror elements. Firstly the police investigate Rahtree’s death, but soon get the willies and run away. A local soothsayer attempts to exorcise Rahtree’s ghost but is more afraid than the police. With the landlady nervous and frustrated as her scared tenants vacate, imminent help is needed. Like a light from Heaven two Catholic priests arrive to settle the ghostly dilemma. The landlady warns that Asian ghosts aren’t like Western ones, but a priest assures her that if the ghost’s not a ‘Phantom of the Opera’, they’ll be fine. With spoof exorcism parodying movie “The Exorcist”, Rahtree curses and vomits like any Linda Blair possessed ghost in a Taiwanese horror spoof can; two priests retreat Rahtree’s unsettled spirit room - very quickly. Soon the apartment block is empty, until the Ultimate Exorcist arrives. Ghosty skits aplenty here is a Taiwanese horror-comedy of ground breaking originality. Brilliant!

Recommended. Mixture of humour and horror exceeds your expectation in this low budget Thai movie. Worth checking out. Superb performance from the actors here. Bonus - twist at the end.

Breaks the horror film mold Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
"Rahtree" is a hugely entertaining movie, telling a classic story of a girl, wronged by a rich young man, who dies only to return as a vengeful ghost wreaking havoc on anyone who dares to approach. Although I suspect the budget was tight for this Thai film, the production values are high and this story is told seamlessly and effectively.

To call the cast of this movie "colorful" doesn't do it justice. This is one of the most unusual casts I've ever seen on film, but they do a terrific job, maintaining a high energy level throughout and bringing this horrific tale to life with welcome doses of comic relief.

I don't watch a lot of horror films because I tend to find them predictable and formulaic. Let me assure you that "Rahtree" breaks the mold; it is anything but formulaic. I truly enjoyed this film and I recommend it highly to everyone.
