Despite having a title that includes the samurai code of honor, Bushido Sixteen is actually a sweet, charming film that joins a long tradition of coming-of-age comedies about young girls bonding over an unlikely sport. Based on the first of three novels by Honda Tetsuya, the film adaptation by director Furumaya Tomoyuki (Naoko) stars two of Japan's most talented young actresses - Narumi Riko (Shodo Girl) and Kitano Kii (Bandage) - as two talented kendo artists. Starting off as a film about the two girls' competition to be the best, Bushido Sixteen eventually becomes a poignant story about how the competitors learn from each other over a strange bonding process that soon evolves into a friendship.

Having started training at a young age, Kaori (Narumi Riko) is a focused and serious kendo artist that only has victory in mind - until Sanae (Kitano Kii) beats her in a junior high school competition. However, what really irks Kaori is that Sanae takes a carefree approach to the sport that's totally opposite of her own attitude. When the two reunite in their high school kendo club, Kaori takes revenge on Sanae in front of everyone by beating her soundly in a match. What Kaori doesn't expect is that Sanae would attempt to befriend her, and Kaori would also begin to realize Sanae's potential as a kendo artist.
