YesAsia Editorial Description

Some stories are timeless, and Butterfly Lovers is one of them. Director Jingle Ma (Fly Me to Polaris) tackles one of the classics with his retelling of this tragic love story, which also served as the basis for the 1963 Shaw Brother's classic The Love Eterne and Tsui Hark's 1994 drama The Lovers. This new version is a clever alternate take on the story of ill-fated lovers Leung Shan Pak and Cheuk Ying Toi, and is given a martial arts spin thanks to the masterful fight choreography of Ching Siu Tung (Hero). Wu Chun of Taiwan boy band Fahrenheit and Charlene Choi of Hong Kong's Twins play the two young lovers, with a host of talent from China, Hong Kong and Taiwan joining them. Actor-singer Hu Ge plays Wu Chun's main romantic rival, with supporting roles filled out by martial artists Hung Yan Yan and Fan Siu Wong, Shaw Brothers legend Ti Lung and Taiwan singer-songwriter Harlem Yu.

Adorable Zhu Yan Gi (Charlene Choi) is female, but her father (Ti Lung) wants her to learn martial arts from the all-male Soul Ease Clan. To ensure her entry into the school, Yan Gi disguises herself as a male scholar, but her slight frame and sometimes ditzy nature make it hard for her to pass the rigorous tests. Luckily, she has an ally in the school's top student, handsome Liang Chun Shan (Wu Chun), who tutors Yan Gi and even nurses her back to health when she takes ill. The two innocently fall in love, but even knowledge of Yan Gi's true identity may not insure their happiness. Yan Gi's childhood friend Ma (Hu Ge) has long carried a torch for her, and is not above using violence and blackmail to insure that she becomes his wife. When Ma's treachery is revealed, Chun Shan has no choice but to use all that he's learned from the Soul Ease Clan to exact justice. But will it be too late to save Yan Gi from a tragic fate?

DVD details Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
It's true that this story is more or less the same as "Romeo and Juliette", so there aren't many surprises. But I liked the adaptation of the story into one of the Dynasties in Chinese history. It gave the story a freshness and originality and the scenery made the whole story so much more beautiful. The sharpness of the colours intensified everything, especially the ending. I also really liked how they had modified the ending to the "myth" of the story (the title).

This edition of "Butterfly Lovers" by Mei Ah Entertainment has 4 subtitle obtions: Traditional Cantonese, traditional Mandarin, simplified Mandarin and English. The English subtitles are really good.
The audio is either Cantonese or Mandarin. As I watched it, I found that with the Cantonese audio it was Charlene Choi's own voice but definitely not Wu Chun's own voice and therefore it was dubbed by someone else. And with the Mandarin audio it was definitely Wu Chun's own voice but I don't think it was Charlene Choi's own. I cannot say for certain.

It's an all region DVD (according to the cover).

A horrible film Customer Review Rated Bad 2 - 2 out of 10
The director Jingle Ma has been a competent commercial director with films like tokyo raiders, silver hawk and even seoul raider and playboy cops were all enjoyable albeit passable, but this film is just plain horrible. the direction is pedestrian and predictable and no time does Ma injecting any tension or passion into the film.

Charlene Choi mugs the screen constantly with her cutesy wide eyed look reach the point of being annoying. Wu Chun fairs slightly better but thats not saying much, he is very wooden and cant carry a film but i guess he is there for all the girls that go gaga for him.

As for the martial arts, they are average at best with Jingle Ma useing a lot of slow motion distracting from the enjoyment. The end fight scene is poorly executed and by the time the audience reaches the end they just do not care about the characters.

The only saving grace of this picture is the presence of a brief cameo from Fan siu wong, who has a well choreographed fight scene that is the highlight of the film.

Language Version Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Could anyone tell me if this version is the Mandarin version and voice is dubbed by Wu Chun himself or Charlene herself? I am afraid of getting the China Mandarin dubbing version. I always prefer the original people with their own voice.
I have seen the Cantonese version on the big screen and was disappointed with Wu Chun's Cantonese.
Please help!

Good movie Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Recently, Hong Kong kept producing pointless films. However, this movie has a storyline. Yes, it's not orginal because you can tell by the title. This movie is like the old version of "Butterfly Lovers" plus "Romeo and Juliet." Charlene's acting has gotten better, but she is acting like herself again (outgoing and tomboyish). Wu Chun's acting is not bad. This movie is worth to watch.
