YesAsia Editorial Description

A host of top Hong Kong names battle it out in Butterfly & Sword, a rousing period adventure with fantastic, surprisingly bloody action sequences! Michelle Yeoh is Sister Ko, a talented martial artist who has long held a torch for her childhood friend Sing (Tony Leung Chiu Wai). But Sing really loves the beautiful Butterfly (Joey Wang), and is clueless to Sister Ko's feelings. And Sister Ko has her own secret admirer, another childhood friend played by Donnie Yen! As if the heroes' love lives weren't enough trouble, there's intrigue afoot in the Martial Arts World, and potential treachery on the horizon. Co-starring Elvis Tsui and Taiwanese idol Jimmy Lin, Butterfly & Sword provides a potent mix of comedy, romance, period intrigue, and simply incredible action sequences. People fly, burst through their opponents, and wield deadly weapons with mind-blowing over-the-top kung-fu panache, all courtesy of renowned action director Ching Siu Tung! The big stars help too, making Butterfly & Sword an entertaining, action-filled period romp!

Professional Review of "Butterfly & Sword"

November 8, 2005

One of the most boring credit sequences ever gives way to an imperial official losing his face. Literally. And we're off into the bent world inside the mind of director Chu Yen-ping. Marking the point at which the period kung fu movie goes from the unreal to the surreal, Butterfly and Sword has the temptations and turbulence of the martial world stand in for the temptations and turbulence of growing old. Are any of us the same person at forty-five that we were at 25? In Butterfly and Sword this question of identity is lethally literalized as double agents, secret identities, and masked swordsmen proliferate like a viral plague.

There's this gang of pals, see? They're happy, giggly kids and then they grow up. Michelle Yeoh, grim-faced and a slave to Eunuch Tsao, nurses a flame for Tony Leung; Donnie Yen, a drunk swordsman who keeps getting wounded to keep Michelle caring for him; and Tony Leung who plays whimsical Sing, sitting in the boughs of trees tossing little paper helicopters to the wind. He pretends to be a simple merchant for the sake of his lady love, Joey Wong, who plays with baby birds and flutters through the peaceful forest like a paper napkin. Both of them moon goonily at the landscape, the fish, and each other, much to Michelle's irritation.

Bodies start to spurt pressurized blood mist as Eunuch Tsao commands Michelle to mobilize her "Happy Forest" army against the combined wicked forces of Eunuch Li and Suen (Elvis Tsui, wearing a variety of studded leather hats). Light humor and romance (when Sing goes on a business trip he gives Joey Wong a fifteen foot "To Do" list) mix with bodies being torn in seven different directions. Like a mid-life nightmare Ching Siu-tung's fevered action choreography features human arrows, floors ripped up and hurled at opponents, the previously-mentioned de-facings, and more blue-lit sword angst than you can shake a stick at.

Taiwan's top director, and the auteur behind such oddities as Fantasy Mission Force and Golden Queen Commando, Chu Yen-ping outdoes himself here - behind his onscreen ravings is an anguished wailing against the implacable approach of old age.

Absolutely mad little movie with a cast to die for, and OTT action choreographed by the amazing Ching Sui Tung.If you haven't already seen this you need a human (bow and) arrow put through you... Luckily, it will be in the form of Tony Leung! Buy it!!

Typical wire swordplay Customer Review Rated Bad 5 - 5 out of 10
Okay to see Michelle, Donnie, Tony, Jimmy & Joey but not really a flick for fights. Michelle & Donnie are the only ones worth while watching in the wire swordplay, typical of those Hong Kong cinema hey days. Nostalgic but not the keeper it may have once been considered.

Great Movie Customer Review Rated Bad 5 - 5 out of 10
I love this movie, the fighting is super and it has a nice, simple story line. I would totally recommend this movie to all those who like a good fighting, good sword play type of movie. It worth your money.
