Anyone who knows Jacky Cheung will know why there is no need to write about Jacky's singing skills in this review. There is no doubt that Jacky is the best pop performer in Canto-pop today, despite his half-retired status. In light of his newly launched world tour, Jacky's back in the studio for his first full-length album in almost three years with By Your Side. Like his previous effort Life is like a Dream, Jacky is in charge as executive producer, but this time, he has left the songwriting to others. Rest assured, though, that Jacky has compiled a very impressive team despite the absence of his long-time partner, the legendary Michael Au (in the liner notes, Jacky explains that Au has left Hong Kong to pursue a career in Beijing). Thanks to Jacky's determination to make music that follows his personal taste, By Your Side is an even stronger album than Life is like a Dream and reminds us why there is no one like Jacky Cheung. Being an artist of Jacky's caliber means that he can take certain artistic risks, and don't let the sentimental words by the man written in the booklet and first single "Long Time No See" (Track 6) fool you - By Your Side manages to take plenty of risks while maintaining an overall mainstream-friendly tone. Best of all, you can even tell that Jacky is having fun. By Your Side starts with "Looking to Fate" (Track 1), a funky track that is so hip that it even features Jacky rapping his heart out. Thanks to producer/famed drummer Jun Kung (who produced three tracks on this album), By Your Side not only gets off to an energetic start, it also jumps into the dark side with "Original Sinner" (Track 2), a hardcore rock track about...global warming. Yes, in addition to his usual ballads, Jacky has gotten socially conscious with tracks such as "Original Sinner" and "It Really Cannot be Solved With Love?" (Track 5), where Jacky delivers lyrics (written by composer Alex Fung) such as "Wars can't bring you peace and order," and "Wars just end with death and fear." Even if you don't buy the message, you can still fall back on the musical aspect, especially the intense "Original Sinner", which now qualifies as the scariest song about global warming ever. Do relax, because By Your Side can also qualify as a soothing album. Much of the tracks are done in a breezy acoustic pace, such as title track By Your Side (Track 3) and "I Don't Wanna Be" (Track 7), both produced by Taiwanese composer/producer Xiao An. They are done in the style of American light rock groove that lightens the tone greatly after the intense "rock with a message" tracks. Even ballads such as "There's a Place" (Track 4) (written by up-and-coming pop artist Khalil Fong) and "Long Time No See" are written and produced in such a minimalist manner that they remain easy on the listeners while maintaining a certain elegance. These tracks aren't written to challenge Jacky's vocals (nor future karaoke patrons), and he manages to find other ways to make his delivery equally effective. On the other hand, the faster-paced tracks, the weak spot in Life is like a Dream, have taken a turn for the groovy thanks to producers Jun Kung and Alex Fung (of the Invisible Man). Both "An Unfinished Lesson" (Track 8) and "Worry Song" (Track 9) help to bring the album to an energetic end by matching the arrangement with its "don't worry, be happy, and all you need is love" message. Jacky even wisely leaves the most somber song, a cover of "Wishing Us Longevity" (Track 10), at the very end to close By Your Side with a bittersweet goodbye. Perhaps the worst thing about reviewing a Jacky Cheung album, particularly this one, is that it means it would be years before his next album. By Your Side really is that good - it's engaging, energetic, soothing, intense, and even risky. It doesn't quite gel into a complete album because the pace starts and stops too often, and it ultimately plays like a compilation of new songs rather than an integrated whole. But that's a small complaint, because By Your Side is already undoubtedly one of the best Chinese albums of 2007. Just imagine what Jacky can do with better arrangements. by Kevin Ma |

i really have to agree with you Liz Tran! everything you said is so true...looks like we're both jacky-addicts..hahahaa since many ppl have already pointed out the key aspects of the cd, i'll use this post to say something about his world tour concert he is currently holding..i saw his concert as well..at his second stop in toronto on march 22..it was awesome!! he told us that he wasn't really satisfied with the vegas concert and he wants to apologize to those who attended =( but you know, being a true jc fan, we're delighted to watch him perform just about anything...after a long 5 years no see!!! besides according to his stardards, a not so good performance is already more that satisfactory compared to many singers today! i sincerely urge everyone of you jc fans to go watch his concert if possible..you'll surely regret it if you miss this one! love jacky always =) |

Cheung Hok Yau Forever!
| I saw him at the 2007 Vegas concert, I forgot how much I loved him! He is such a great singer and his voice is so powerful, needless to say I enjoyed the CD. I love track 2, it may be because of the visuals at the concert. It is fabulous that Jacky is always changing and sometimes to some of us it takes some getting use to (such as rap songs) but I hope that he continues to come out with new cd's and concerts so that we can all benefit from his talent! He is so great! BEST singer EVER! |

A near perfect effort
| I viewed the "Long Time No See" MV on the net and loved the song. As for other songs, they're not too bad. It'll take me longer to accept his rap songs. I like traditional love ballads he used to sing that are karaoke friendly to us, the karaoke singers. R & B, rock, pop/rock, easy listening and some hip-hop are okay for me. P.S.: I hope he'll sing "Together Now", the English song he sung as an opening (the first) song at the opening ceremony of the Doha 2006 Asian Games in Qatar (Middle East) at his concert in Sydney, plus many other songs. He has at least few hundred songs that are really worth listening to, in which he can choose from to make into his list of 30 odd songs to be sung at the concert! Some songs from "Snow Wolf Lake" is a must. Sorry, hogging so much space, this shall be my last post for this product. Please take care, guys and gals. Peace. |
