Also known as Send in the Clowns, Cabaret Tears marks a turning point in the prolific career of its star, Sylvia Chang. The Taiwanese-born actress's pretty face had been a familiar feature of the Hong Kong filmscape for the better part of a decade, but with this 1983 melodrama Chang began to take an active role behind the camera as well. Her credit for Planning on Cabaret Tears foreshadows Chang's later acclaimed work as a writer and director on films like Princess D and Happy Birthday.

In Cabaret Tears, Sylvia plays the younger of two sisters who eke out a living singing in cabaret acts touring run-down venues in Hong Kong. Sensing that their way of life is fast becoming extinct, the elder sister (Chang Shio Yen) pressures her sibling to make a bid for stardom as a lead actress. But Sylvia, convinced that happiness cannot be found on the stage, becomes disenchanted with the showbiz world. When an opportunity for a "big break" presents itself in Taipei, the sisters are forced to reexamine their lives, and may finally have to go their separate ways.

A troupe of entertainers struggles to make living by touring sleazy theatres and music halls. Although the business is declining and so as the quality of the audience, two sisters are part of the troupe. The elder, Chang Mei Yu, keeps trying to push her sister Mei Wai into the leading role. But Mei Wai sees no future in the troupe. A young reporter follows the troupe to do an investigative report. He falls in love with Mei Wai and encourages her to lead her own life. Mei Yu, after making all the sacrifices, has to stand up by herself to face the future......
