In the film, the wife of the worker, Lao Er, goes out to walk a dog that doesn't have the right to exist (i.e a "Dog Raising Permit"). A policeman appears and the dog is confiscated. If the family doesn't pay the fine, a considerable amount for this family, within the designated time period, then the dog will disappear from their lives forever.

"Cala" is a small gem

In "Cala, My Dog", Ge You stars as Lao Er, a clueless, weak-willed, hen-pecked factory worker whose pet dog is taken away by the police because his family has failed to buy an ownership license for the dog. During the course of Lao Er's efforts to get his dog back, the viewer gains unexpected insights into family relationships, government bureaucracy, and the minor hassles of day-to-day life in Beijing. Ge You is brilliant and "Cala, My Dog" is an entertaining, humorous, and heartbreaking minor masterpiece. I highly recommend it. |
