Can't Be Half (Blu-spec CD)

Hong Kong pop singer Jason Chan follows up his EP Close Up released May 2009 with another album at the end of the year. Titled Can't Be Half, the new album is headed by the hit single "Half Dating" written by Lin Xi, who also penned another new plug for Jason known as "No Wrong Done".

Manufactured in Japan, the Blu-Spec CD is a high-quality audio recording medium employing state-of-the-art technology developed by Sony. A Blu-Spec CD is playable in ordinary CD players.

Vast Improvements Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10

Compared to his last full length album ("Change"), this is more or less of the same style. Recycling a few songs from his EP "Close Up", Jason Chan has done decent, if not good, on "Can't Be Half". His ballads are a twitch easier on the ears than the other songs that move outside that genre, but vocally Jason has made great improvements over his previous songs.

Some key songs on the album:

01. "拍一半拖/Can't be Half." - 8.5/10. The titular track defines the album as a whole. Not much variability throughout the song, with little key changes and a very basic structure, but still very consistent as a whole. Worth a second listen. This is where Jason does best, and he sings this ballad quite well.

02. "人外有人/Men Beyond Men." - 8/10. Another typical ballad which Jason does well in, but unfortunately has a forgettable melody and is overshadowed by some of the other songs from the album.

03. "最後的擁抱/Last Embrace." - 7/10. A cover of Japanese rock group Flumpool's "MW ～Dear Mr. & Ms. ピカレスク～". This is a song with hype but not too much to show for it. Not the best of covers, as his voice isn't well suited to the style.

04. "無可厚非/No Wrong Done." - 8.5/10. A faster paced ballad, well written by Leona Chan and some excellent lyrics by Lin Xi. Jason does well to keep the melody going in this plug, and shows good emotion in his vocals.

08. "你瞞我瞞/You Lie, I Lie." - 9/10. The second track from his EP, "Close Up." This song was the awarded as among the Top 10 Cantonese songs from 2009. A slow, pulsating ballad, well suited to Jason's style, with Lin Xi's infamous lyrics and brings out the full potential of his vocals.

Overall album rating - 8/10. A rather one-dimensional album, but one that showcases the style which he does best.
