曹雪芹生在南京江寧織造署，他的表妹綺筠寄養在曹家。曹家被抄，不得不效力於怡親王王子弘昌。十幾年後，弘歷登基，雪芹的大姐鳳藻封為貴人，曹家再次興盛起來，雪芹深愛綺筠，父母與其約定，只有考取功名才能考慮他們的婚事，但雪芹卻未能考中，悲憤中結識了優伶子都。弘昌等人謀刺乾隆未遂，曹家受到牽邊再次被抄，雪芹、綺筠倖免於難，但綺筠卻落入人販子的魔爪。子都賣身救綺筠未果，綺筠被賣到了妓院，雪芹經受不住打擊，神情恍惚。惠藍為幫雪芹，與他成婚，幫助他恢復了正常。雪匠在妙香院偶遇綺筠，面對她和惠藍，雪芹痛苦萬分，著手創作《石頭記》。乾隆下令禁絕此書，雪芹的家一再被抄。萬記俱灰的雪芹留下《石頭記》，醉倒在茫茫白雪之中。
