Written and directed by Watanabe Kazushi,
Captain Tokio is a colorful and riotous youth film with the zest, energy, and campiness of a live-action anime. Set in a near future post-apocalyptic Tokyo, the film stars heartthrob Wentz Eiji of WaT (
Gegege no Kitaro) and television star Nakao Akiyoshi (
Samurai Commando Mission 1549) as youth who revolt in the name of movies and rock 'n' roll. The film throws together action, coming-of-age, comedy, and road film elements into a fun, edgy piece of free-wheeling movie-making.
Captain Tokio comes complete with a motley line-up of supporting characters portrayed by Ishida Issei (
Indian Summer), Shigeru Izumiya (
Tenshi), Shibukawa Kiyohiko (
Big Bang Love, Juvenile A), and Watanabe Kazushi himself.
In the year 20XX, anarchy reigns over Tokyo after a devastating earthquake destroyed the city. Isolated from the rest of the country, the chaos-ridden city is ruled over by an autocratic governor (Izumiya Shigeru) who has forbidden all forms of entertainment including cinema. Timid movie lover Furuta (Wentz Eiji) and mischievous rocker Nitta (Nakao Akiyoshi), two peddling high school boys lost in the city's wasteland, gather forces and lead a youth rebellion against the governor.
