Indispensable simply for the memories it brings back

For those who grew up on animated shows and are eager to get in touch with their childhood again, Cartoon Kingdom transports one back in time faster than a flying DeLorean. Granted there were Hong Kong cartoon theme song compilations before, but none were anywhere near as comprehensive as this groovy baby, which is an unprecedented joint release from nine Hong Kong record labels. Housed in an attractive packaging with a handy booklet containing the lyrics and basic credits to every single song, this 4-CD set appeals not only to those after a quality nostalgic time, but also to the fans of the artists given the number of familiar yet hard-to-find recordings on the album. The 60 songs that make it to the menu are mostly from 1980s and '90s Japanese TV anime series, with a couple of exceptions such as the American ThunderCats and The Smurfs, Japanese film My Neighbor Totoro, and tokusatsu series Ultraman Tiga. A handsome portion of the album comes from unforgettable classics like Candy Candy, Queen Millennia, Dr. Slump, Gold Lightan, Ninja Hattori-kun, Creamy Mami, and Dragon Ball Z to name a few, offering localized versions of the original Japanese tunes. On the other hand, songs like those from City Hunter, Saint Seiya, Sailor Moon, My Daddy Long Leg, Nintama Rantaro, Pokemon, and Beyblade are original compositions made in Hong Kong. In many cases, the songs were only heard in snippets during the TV broadcast, and now this compilation presents a rare opportunity to listen to the songs in their full glory. Some of the picks are even available on CD for the first time. Cartoon Kingdom is enormously awesome, but still there are places where improvements could be made. First off, the track sequencing/disc allocation appears to be random and could perhaps use some clearer categorization. As for the song selection, it is inevitable that people would have issues with it even though it's quite comprehensive already. Presumably most people would prefer Doraemon's best-known theme song (when it was known as "Ding Dong") to the newer version sung by Kelly Chen. Similarly, Twins' Hamtaro would probably be a more popular choice than 2R's. Wu Wai Hong's Game Center Arashi opening theme might be a little more representative than Anita Mui's ending theme, too. On another note, the Captain Tsubasa song that ends up on the disc is not the main theme it claims to be but the ending theme, but that is no less a great song so the blunder is forgivable. However, the same cannot be said of the baffling inclusion of Miriam Yeung's song titled "Neon Genesis Evangelion", which has little to do with the series other than the namesake title. Of course, the above is just this editor's personal rants, and debates on why a certain song is included but not the other could go on and on and on. Let's just keep fingers crossed that should this album be profitable, the record companies would release a bigger and better second volume of some other golden cartoon oldies sooner rather than later. |
