Challenge of the Masters
|
The opening plot is misleading as we know that Wong Fei Hung actually started training martial arts from a very young age. To portray him as having no skills at all and then learning the art from his father's teacher Lok Ah Choy (nicely played by Chen Kuan Tai) is confusing Wong Fei Hung's fans. Chen Kuan Tai showed that he still got what it takes (his character Lok was one of the disciples from Shaolin), and Liu Chia Liang who played the villian executed some fantastic fighting sequences in both the forest encounters (the latter with Gordon). The training techniques of the pole are true to life and this is one of the reasons why we're all fascinated with his movies. He always try to deliver the true techniques and real martial arts movements to the audience. Don't let this one slip away! |

Wong Fei Hung comes of age
|
"Challenge of the Masters" returns once again to the familiar story of the bumbling Wong Fei Hung and his training to become a righteous martial arts master. The film starts very slowly; the first 30 minutes are quite uneven. However, once Gordon Liu (as Wong Fei Hung) begins his martial arts training under the tutelage of Teacher Lu (nicely underplayed by Chen Kuan Tai), the movie begins to grab your attention. Wong Fei Hung's progress is shown realistically and in some detail. Lau Kar Leung does a fine job of playing the film's bad guy. The film's climax, for me, is the titanic battle between Gordon Liu and Lau Kar Leung, a very well-executed display of fighting skills. A unique aspect of this film is its depiction of the moral dimension of martial arts training and how that morality plays a key role in the film's culmination. In the end, "Challenge of the Masters" proves to be well worth watching. |

A moderate
| The title of the movie seems interesting but the actual plots are not promising. It depicts how a young Wong Fei Hung learns martial arts from another guru rather than his own father. It is not up to my expectation with less of fighting and graceful choreography. Not recommended for real kungfu fans. |

Classic Lau Gar Leung
| This is one of Lau Gar Leung's earlier and better films. It teaches the true meaning of martial arts and depicts the interesting relationship between father, son and teacher. Although there are not too many fight scenes, the two main fights were excellent. The training methods in the film was interesting and each specific training was depicted in actual combat. Highly recommended. |
