She's still a pearl Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
I know that Connie has retired from the movie world more than 30 yrs ago but didn't realise she's still in touch with the 'opera community' until I chanced upon this dvd. As a huge fan of hers back in the 60s (even had photo taken with her), I have to check her up especially when she looked every inch as beautiful as she did back then on this dvd cover. Still so elegant, matured and graceful.

For the opening operatic numbers, Connie chose 4 songs popularised by 2 other opera legends (I love them as well), Pak Suet Sin and Yum Kim Fai (also Connie's sifu). Her female backup was also another opera singer who has been around since the 70s too. Beautifully done. My only complaint is that she should have don opera costumes for these particular numbers. But since it was the 7th day of Chinese New Year (maybe she started the concert days earlier), she chose to wear a red- beaded open-back gown for her entrance and opening numbers.

For whatever purpose, her son and his friend performed a couple of modern songs, perhaps as part of a supporting act. I wasn't impressed as they weren't holding their notes that well but the friend played well on the piano. The audience's reaction were a little mixed. However, during a costume change for Connie, he took the stage and introduced the various types of chinese musical instruments (from the supporting orchestra) which I thought were very interesting.

The 2nd disc consists of some modern songs (dancers' costumes does not reflect the mood of the songs???), a couple of duets with her son and a few more solo numbers which included a little dance choreography (a little dated in my opinion).

All said, it could have been better. Maybe she should have done away with her son's supporting act. If you're a Connie fan, get this for sentimental value.
