Chaos By Design is one of only three films helmed by New Wave director Angela Chan (My Name Ain't Suzie, Maybe It's Love) during the mid-1980s. Produced by renowned writer Choi Lan, this entertaining romance stars singer Alex To and Hong Kong beauties Cecilia Yip and Cherie Chung, who also starred in Chan's debut Maybe It's Love. To plays dashing fashion designer Ka Bo, who just returned from Japan. Through his boss he meets Ah Sung (Cecilia Yip), but they get off to a bad start because of a misunderstanding. The two become friends after Ka Bo helps Ah Sung out during an arranged date she was unwillingly roped into. The growing attraction between Ka Bo and Ah Sung is clear, but both are unwilling to take the first step. Ka Bo tries to seek advice from a mutual friend (Cherie Chung), but things only get worse because Ah Sung mistakes Ka Bo for cheating. When Ah Sung decides to leave Hong Kong, Ka Bo must pull out all the stops to keep his love.

It's a long way from 'My Name Ain't Suzie'!

In "Chaos By Design", Ka Bo (Alex To) returns from Japan to take a job as a fashion designer. Given the sexual preferences of the other men in his office, there is much speculation among the secretarial staff about whether Ka Bo is gay (which he is not, although soon everyone believes he is). Rockie (Cherie Chung) and Ah Sung (Cecilia Yip) are lesbian friends who work together as an on-air radio team. Ah Sung's aunts return to Hong Kong from America, urging Ah Sung to marry and seeking to set her up with potential husbands. To discourage her aunts from pursuing this match-making, Ah Sung pretends to have a live-in boyfriend. She asks Ka Bo to pretend to be her boyfriend, as she assumes that he is gay; Ka Bo agrees. As they spend time together, however, they find that they enjoy each others' company and a real affection grows between them. Is Ah Sung not a lesbian, after all? Can she really love a man? Can Ka Bo come out of his shy shell and announce his love for Ah Sung? And, after a night of drinking, when Rockie ends up in bed with Ka Bo, will these friendships be blown apart? "Chaos By Design" clearly was shot on a shoestring budget. It is filled with wild 1980s clothing and hair styles and lots of smirky humor about sexual preferences. What makes it enjoyable is watching the chemistry grow between Alex To and Cecilia Yip and watching Cherie Chung and Cecilia Yip play off of each other. Cherie and Cecilia look young and gorgeous and the movie never takes itself too seriously. Fans of 1980s Hong Kong cinema definitely should see this one. |
