YesAsia Editorial Description

After the success of RING and RING 2, director Hideo Nakata decided to take a break from the horror genre to make this thriller. CHAOS begins as a couple--Takayuki (Ken Mitsuishi) and Satomi (Miki Nakatani)--go out for lunch. Afterwards, Satomi disappears, and it is not long before Takayuki, a businessman, begins receiving strange ransom demands. As the relationship between Satomi and her captor, Goro (Masato Hagiwara), is revealed, the film begins to unfold a labyrinthine plot where nothing is as it appears. Although CHAOS opens with what seems to be a standard thriller plot, Nakata and screenwriter Hisashi Saito have created a unique movie that blends genres while invoking a number of classic films, including Akira Kurosawa's HIGH & LOW and Alfred Hitchcock's VERTIGO. Placed out of sequence, the pieces of Nakata's puzzle are arranged so that the audience is consistently off balance. In the process, the director creates a thoroughly engaging neo-noir suspense film that's sure to keep viewers guessing up until the very end.

"Nakata scrambles the chronology....He gives the proceedings a genuine sense of dread." - David, Cox (Uncut Critic), Uncut, 11/01/2004

Memento meets Malice Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Chaos is told much like Memento in that flashback scenes are entwined with present tense scenes. Sometimes it can be a little disorienting, but it all clicks into place sooner or later. It never achieves 'creepy' or 'scary' status but I don't suppose it was ever meant to. It does, however, illustrate a well-planned thriller told in a manner that drives your desire to know what key information is going to be revealed from the past that explains what just happened in the last scene.

The level of character depth is mediocre, and is often confusing to a fault. Other times it seems inconsistent. But the overall story and the way it's told is what makes 'Chaos' worth watching.

It's truly like a surreal jigsaw puzzle: with every piece you snap into place, you realize more and more that the picture on the box isn't quite the same as the picture of the puzzle.
