Sakamoto Ryuichi "CHASM"- Irresistible Muse

There seem to be no rest areas or any stop signs in the musical world of Sakamoto Ryuichi. The never-say-never attitude towards music that this Japanese singer always has is witnessed again on the album "CHASM".

Originality is found in both of the melodies and the lyrics of "undercooled". This crossover production is a mixture of rap music rendered by MC Sniper and oriental stringed instruments. The lyrics are introspective enough to inspire a critical perspective towards our race, society, history and our dignity.

"War & Peace" uses a set of rhetorical questions to query the value of wars. The whole song never says "No" but the war-is-not-the-answer message is subtly and yet convincingly conveyed. Sakamoto Ryuichi takes part in the sound programming of this song and the multi-vocal effect is attractive to offer sensual stimulation. "World Citizen- I won't be disappointed/ looped piano" is a collaboration of Sakamoto Ryuichi and David Sylvian. With Sylvian's sentimental vocal, the lyrics of this song can really get you into deep thinking.

"coro", " only love can conquer hate", "+pantonal", "The Land Song (music for Artelligent city/ one winter day mix " and "break with" are pure music. Pure music actually may not be the most precise description of "only love can conquer hate" because there is no melody but one single continuing note, or sound effect to be exact, on this 6-minute track. Higgledy-piggledy as it may seem, these 6 minutes may make an ideal space for us to rethink the interplay between love and hatred.

"Ngo" is the single version without the decoration of Bossanova. A bunch of sample voice effects is added to make this bitmix version, which is as pleasing as the original.

Tracks Recommended: "undercooled", "War & Peace", "only love can conquer hate", "Ngo/ bitmix"

Sound means so much more on this album Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
This really is the chill/lounge album I've been waiting for and hoping it would be. (Well, except for Coro... I have to say, this song is one that will leave you wondering what qualifies as music. Basically, Sakamoto managed to take a lot of random noise (as in bad signals, etc) and put it to a beat, constructing a song out of it. There's definately a lot of experimental work on here, and lots of music based on a concept more than trying to put lyrics to instruments. This is certainly one album that is a journey. And it's a journey that will leave you thinking about many things, both related and not related to music itself. I would reccomend this CD really only to someone who is comfortable with this type of music due to the way it challenges conventional ideas of music.
