　　十九世紀中葉，兩個交情很深的家族閔家和竺家，一起下南洋做苦工，並在一次瘟疫中先後死去。他們的兩個兒子閔壽楠和竺臻，拿著父輩掙下的血汗錢，在昆明合夥開了一間老滇貨棧。

　　由於閔壽楠與竺自臻所熱衷的經營思路不同，終歸分道揚鑣，閔壽楠繼續以傳統的思路開著貨棧，自臻則遠渡重洋，有成而歸，以開闊的思路，在創建了專營洋貨的南洋貨棧。

　　閔、竺兩家，圍繞傳統與圖新，不停地進行暗中較量：時，由於遺留著當初創建貨棧時，竺家入股的100兩黃金長期沒有得到結算，導致閔家為了保住貨棧，不得不屈從於竺家提出兒女換姻緣。
