YesAsia Editorial Description
Matsu Takako's career enters its 10th anniversary. Incredible, but true, music lovers have had the pleasure to listen to actress/singer Matsu Takako's voice for a decade already. Her latest studio album, Cherish You, not only includes the hit Minna Hitori, but also comes filled with compositions by other big stars as well as collaboration works. What's more, it also features a new version of Takako's 1997 debut hit Ashita, Haruga Kitara ("Tomorrow, When Spring Comes").

Cherish You -- Second thoughts
Cherish You -- Second thoughts

Ten days ago, after listening to this CD three times, I posted a rather mixed, lukewarm review of it. I should have given it more time. With repeated playing, the album has grown on me. I now believe it is superb, almost flawless. I find that this often is the case with Miss Matsu's recordings. The artistry on her albums, from the songwriting to the production to the musicianship to the singing, is so subtle that one's first reaction is to find the music superficial. However, over time the listener comes to appreciate and embrace the beautiful subtlety. One doesn't get tired of Miss Matsu's albums; one only grows more fond of them with repeated exposure. This is a terrific album and I highly recommend it to everyone. |

As usual, Matsu Takako serves up an assortment of well-crafted, crisply-played mainstream pop. The new album "Cherish You" sounds much more contemporary than Matsu's previous album, the timeless "Bokura ga Ita." However, the contemporary sound actually sounds less fresh. Indeed, since this is a 10th anniversary recording for Miss Matsu, I listened again to her first album and, surprisingly, found that her first album still sounds fresher and more original than this one. "Cherish You" starts off with an entirely new version of Matsu's first single, "Ashita, Haruga Kitara." While the new version lacks the lovely chorus of the original, it greatly benefits from a much less rigid rhythmic arrangement. The new version proves to be quite a bit catchier than the original. Tracks 3, 5, 6, and 10 are enjoyable songs that feature confident vocals from Miss Matsu. Tracks 2, 4, and 7 all sound quite generic. Indeed, when I first listened to this album, I had become discouraged by the time I reached the end of track 7. Would I hear nothing on this album that really grabbed me? Tracks 8, 9, and 11 change that impression. Track 8 stands out as a beautiful, Brazilian-inflected number. Track 9 is a lovely, lilting waltz with which Miss Matsu seems to find a real emotional connection. And track 11 is simply ravishing, a delicate, stunningly beautiful melody that truly is unforgettable. This not only is one of my favorite Matsu Takako songs of all time, it is one of my favorite songs of all time, period. Recommended for all fans of thoughtful mainstream pop. |
