It is the summer of 1948 amid the ruins of Hiroshima and pretty young Mitsui (Miyazawa Rie), suffering from radiation poisoning, lives day to day consumed by guilt as she dutifully attends to her job as a librarian. She feels guilty for living while all of her friends were obliterated by the bomb and guilty about her inability to save her father's life when he was crushed under their collapsed home. Into her solitary world enters researcher Kinoshita (Asano Tadanobu) and everything changes. Director Kuroki Kazuo's "The Face of Jizo" tells of the difficulty of resurrecting one's life in the wake of disaster. The arrival of Kinoshita gives Mitsui hope for a new life, but -- haunted by the illogic of her guilt -- she wonders whether she is deserving of this hope. Most of the film's story is told through a series of dialogues between Mitsui and the specter of her dead father, played by Harada Yoshio, who also starred in Kuroki's earlier movie "Roningai". ("The Face of Jizo" originally was a stage play and director Kuroki mounts this film in a manner very similar to a play.) The story's dissection of Mitsui's grief is deep and profoundly moving. Miyazawa Rie underplays her character's emotions to tremendous effect. Her quiet and subtle approach draws the audience into the film and makes us root for her to enjoy some happiness. Harada Yoshio breathes rambunctious life into the film. While "The Face of Jizo" is very much a Japanese film, its theme of the struggle to overcome grief and guilt is universal. I recommend this movie very highly. |

The background of this story is the around WW2, actually that's quite a sensitive background to many ppl... but this story is mainly about the love. Many ppl will not treasure a friend or their parents until they actually lose them. This story is talking about "to love and treasure someone". And Rie dare not to love others, but when it comes, no one can stop them anyway... The whole story moves not very fast, but can "draw" a very beautiful picture of everyone's heart. you'd feel warm and touching after watching this DVD. |
