The Golden Monkey of the title is none other than Sun Wukong, a.k.a. the legendary "Monkey King" from the influential Journey to the West. In 1985, Shanghai Animation Film Studio followed up its 1960s masterpiece Havoc in Heaven with another animated film based on the Chinese literature classic. Directed by Te Wei, Yan Dingxian, and Lin Wenxiao, The Golden Monkey Conquers the Evil follows Wukong and his fellow disciples as they protect their master Tang Monk on his mission to retrieve the Sutras. They encounter en route several monsters disguising as ordinary people, who are promptly dispensed with by the mighty Monkey King. Tang Monk, unable to see the victims' true nature, tells Wukong off for his killing spree, and angrily kicks him out of the team. Feeling that he's been wronged, Wukong retreats to his den at the Flower Fruit Mountain to tend to his own monkey business. But when he learns that Tang Monk and company are in grave danger being caught in the deadly trap of the Skeleton Monster, he immediately leaps to his master's rescue...

孫悟空保護唐僧去西天取經，師徒四人來到一處深山僻野。 遇一村姑聲稱遇見老虎，腳摔傷不能行走，要唐僧背他。悟空一見村姑大叫妖怪，用金箍棒打去，村姑從山崖滾下去，但她的精靈已化為輕煙逃跑了。唐僧見悟空無故打死村姑，正在生氣，又見一個男孩叫著媽媽從前面奔來。唐僧肯定他是村姑的兒子這時悟空一見男孩，大喝妖怪，又將他打死，唐僧怒責悟空連喪二命。他們再往前走個老漢趕來，悟空火眼金睛，看清老漢也是白骨精所變，又把他打死。唐僧大怒，唸起緊箍咒，並決意把悟空趕走。悟空忍受委屈，拜別師父，回到花果山。而唐僧等人卻中了白骨精的奸計被妖怪捉住，八戒僥倖逃出，赴花果山請回孫悟空搭救唐僧…
