The debut feature of director Hur Jin Ho (One Fine Spring Day), Christmas in August stars two of the most popular actors in Korea, Han Suk Kyu (Shiri) and Shim Eun Ha (Art Museum by the Zoo, Tell Me Something). It was screened during the International Critics Week at the Cannes Film Festival in 1998.

Shot in a secluded area outside of Seoul, Christmas in August centers around a small photography shop owned by Jung Won (Kim Suk Kyu), who has an incurable disease that leaves him only a short time to live. Meanwhile, he meets Darim (Shim Eun Ha), a meter reader who drops by his studio to develop pictures of parking violators. As she becomes a part of his daily routine, he finds himself becoming more and more attached to her. But he can't express his affections to her because he knows he doesn't have much time left.

- 일본으로 건너 간 한국영화 <8월의 크리스마스>
국내에서 1998년 개봉되었던 한석규, 심은하 주연에 허진호 감독이 메가폰을 잡았던 영화 <8월의 크리스마스>. 한국영화 <8월의 크리스마스> 국내에서 개봉 당시 불치병으로 시한부 삶을 사는 사진사와 주차 단속원의 순수하고 안타까운 사랑을 그린 수작 멜로물로 평단과 관객에게 모두 좋은 평가 받았다. 국내의 흥행에 힘입어 한국영화 <8월의 크리스마스>는 일본에서 그 다음해에 소개되었고, 일본 내에서도 큰 반향을 일으키며 흥행에도 성공했다. 이 결과는 이후 <8월의 크리스마스>가 리메이크되는 계기를 마련해준다. 그때까지의 한국영화 멜로 드라마 장르에서는 흔히 볼 수 없었던 롱테이크와 절제된 대사의 미학은 리메이크된 영화에도 많은 영향을 미친다.

2005년 일본에서 리메이크된 동명의 영화는 드라마 장르에 유독 강한 일본 특유의 감성을 담은 내러티브를 보여주면서도 기존 원작이 가지고 있는 세련된 화법과 형식미를 살리고 있다. 원작이 보여주는 일관된 '절제의 미학'은 리메이크작에서도 이어지고 있다. 그러나 일본적 색채를 드러내는 영화의 배경과 전개 방식은 원작과는 또 다른 감수성을 보여준다.

허준호 감독의 동명 원작은 국내 개봉 당시 그 동안의 멜로 드라마와는 전혀 다른 절제 미학을 보여줌으로써 찬사를 받은 바 있다. 그러나 일본은 이러한 절제된 감정과 세련된 멜로 드라마의 화법을 일찌감치 선보여왔다. 이와이 순지의 <러브 레터>나 <실락원> 등의 TV 드라마를 통해 감각적이고 차분하면서도 궁극적으로 짜임새 있는 감동을 안겨주는 드라마에 강한 면모를 보여왔던 것이다. 이 리메이크작은 이런 일본 영화계의 강점을 극대화한 작품의 완성도를 보여준다는 점에서 원작을 넘어서고 있다.

- 원작 이미지를 좀 더 성숙하게 재해석한 두 주연 캐릭터들
원작에서 한석규와 심은하가 각각 연기했던 '정원'과 '다림'은 리메이크작으로 와서는 내면의 생각들을 더 많이 보여줌으로써 심리 변화를 좀 더 디테일하게 묘사하고 있다. 그럼으로써 각각의 캐릭터들은 한층 성숙된 이미지를 갖게 되었고 결과적으로 영화 전체의 느낌을 세련되고 정돈된 방향으로 완성시켰다. 리메이크작에서 주연을 맡은 두 배우들은 일본에서도 각각의 자신만의 캐릭터를 갖고 있기로 유명해 이 리메이크작 속에서도 그 진가를 발휘하고 있다.

- 죽음과 사랑, 그리고 인생에 대한 따뜻한 시선
<8월의 크리스마스>는 원작과 리메이크작 모두 죽음과 사랑, 그리고 인생 전반에 관해 따뜻한 시선을 보내고 있는 작품이다. 자신의 죽음을 알고 있는 남자의 사랑, 그리고 그 남자의 죽음을 알지 못하는 여자의 이끌림, 남겨진 가족과 주변 사람들에 대한 미안함과 안타까움 등. 이 영화가 보여주는 드라마는 단순한 남녀간의 사랑 이야기를 넘어서 삶과 죽음에 관한 깊은 통찰을 보여준다. 특히 일본 리메이크작에서는 죽음을 준비하는 과정에서 예측하지 못한 사랑을 만나게 되면서 차츰 변해가는 주인공의 심리를 섬세하게 포착해내는데 중점을 두고 있다.

- 아름답고 서정적인 카메라 워크가 담아낸 영화 속 풍경
원작도 유영길 촬영감독의 유려한 솜씨로 보기 드문 아름다운 화면을 선보였지만 리메이크작은 세련된 구도와 서정적인 풍경이 영화의 또 다른 주인공으로 여겨질 만큼 눈길을 끈다. 비 오는 날이나 바람이 부는 날, 두 사람의 데이트 장면, 그리고 정감있는 사진관 전경 등을 화려하거나 요란하지는 않지만 깔끔하게 담아낸 촬영 솜씨가 원작처럼 돋보이는 작품이다. 예쁜 사진엽서 같은 이런 영화의 구도는 멜로 드라마의 감성을 한층 더 끌어 올린다.

아버지로부터 물려 받은 사진관을 경영하는 스즈키 히사토시는 사진관을 찾는 사람들의 행복한 순간을 담으며 조용한 나날을 보내고 있다. 어느 날, 사진관에 초등학교 교사 유키코가 찾아왔다. 그 이후, 유키코는 사진관의 단골손님이 되고 그와의 격 없는 이야기를 즐기게 된다. 하지만 그는 자신이 병에 걸려 살 날이 얼마 남지 않았다는 것을 알고 있다.

아버지, 여동생과 사는 그는 언제나 가족들과 단란한 생활을 보내고 있지만 자신의 병에 대해서는 입을 다물고 있다. 그만큼 그의 고독은 절절하다. 운명을 맞을 날을 담담히 기다리는 그에게 생기 넘치는 유키코와의 생활은 자그마한 기쁨을 주는데....

A fleeting romance Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10

Someone needs to explain to me why so many Korean movies and TV series focus on the fatal illness/doomed romance theme. "Christmas in August" definitely falls within this category and, fortunately, succeeds admirably. Early in the film we learn that photography shop proprietor Jung Won (Kim Suk Kyu) suffers from a fatal and incurable disease (a disease which never is identified in the film and which seems to have no visible symptoms). Nice guy Jung Won is in his thirties, but has never married (because he knew of his illness, perhaps?). Nice girl Darim (Shim Eun Ha), who dispenses parking tickets for a living, begins to frequent his shop, at first to get photos developed. However, something other than the photos begins to develop -- Jung Won and Darim begin to fall in love with each other.

At the same time that this romance is blossoming, Jung Won is making preparations for his impending demise. He writes directions for his father to use the VCR, a new technology that baffles him. He visits with his old school chums one last time. He writes out directions for how the photo development equipment functions. He takes his own memorial portrait. There is one preparation, however, that Jung Won is unable to make; he is unable to tell Darim of his condition. Then one day he fails to show up at the shop and Darim is baffled by his disappearance...

"Christmas in August" succeeds by rejecting the conventions of its genre. Director Hur Jin Ho shuns histrionics and melodrama. Instead, he creates a quiet evocation of two human paths intersecting ever so briefly. Both lead actors give exceptionally good performances. Shim Eun Ha was born to play roles like this; her ability to convey subtle changes in mood and emotion is superb. And it is such subtleties that form the sum and substance of this winning film. If you demand stories told with bold strokes, then "Christmas in August" may not be for you. If you prefer a quieter, more naturalistic approach to movie-making, then, like me, you likely will enjoy this film very much.
