Fine remake of 47 Ronin tale
|
There are, of course, many filmed versions of the 47 Ronin epic, but I find this 1962 version directed by Inagaki Hiroshi to be particularly memorable. Visually, it is gorgeous. The stagecraft of the formal ceremonies is striking; they resemble choreographed dances. The cast, which includes Mifune Toshiro, is superb. And the story unfolds at a measured pace that allows the viewer to appreciate its complexities, significance, and depth. I watched a DVD of this movie with excellent English subtitles that was produced in the United States by Image Entertainment in 2001. I believe that it still is available. |
