Shanghai is a trance-like city where changes are rapid and life speeds by in a blur. Dutch director David Verbeek attempts to capture the sleepless city on film in his urban drama City of Trance (a.k.a. Shanghai Trance) which screened at the 2008 Shanghai Film Festival. The film covers three different stories about the lives and loves of twenty-something Shanghainese, following the burgeoning romances between a beer girl and a DJ, an unemployed youth and a girl-next-door, and a white-collar girl and a foreigner. The hopes sentiments, and insecurities of this young generation play out like a trance-like dream against the Shanghai nightscape. Starring Tian Yuan (Butterfly), Lu Yulai (Peacock), Cheng Haofeng (Esquire Runway), TV actress Xiao Han, and Zhang Heng (Princess Returning Pearl).
