January 31, 2006 Showdown = Letdown
I came into this movie expecting an awfully cliched storyline, accompanied by some terrible acting, but made up by some great fight scenes. And make no mistake, apart from some interesting narratives on the philosphy of fighting, the plot remains poor. And despite some potentially tense (and sometimes comedic) moments, the acting is dire throughout. But I didn't care, all I wanted to see was some cool fighting. Unfortunately, by the end of the first real fight, I realised that I wouldn't even be graced with some good action. With fighting fans being treated to the latest from Tony Jaa (Tom Yum Goong) and Donnie Yen (Sha Po Lang), Geochilmaru has a tough job in trying to impress viewers. Admittedly, those movies have a far better budget to work from and star quality fighters playing the lead roles. But I was still willing to give Geochilmaru a chance. And yet it still let me down. The main problem I found with the action was that the fighting, although performed by real fighters, is incredibly unexciting. Only a few times did I believe that one of the combatants had been hit (or landed) a solid blow. The fight choreography was too slow and laborious to make me believe that any of the fighters looked like they were in a real fight. The action simply isn't portrayed well enough to make it believable. If it weren't for the actress playing Ironpalm being nice looking, or fighters 'Mohican' and 'Musasi66' having cool peronas, I would have laughed my way through this movie. Honestly. I suppose the music is quite good in places though, but even that quickly becomes annoying. And some of the background scenery is nice. But ultimately, the whole Geochilmaru package is incredibly disappointing, and will not only fail to impress movie fans, but fans of the fighting genre.
