Borderline Outrageous
| Luckily for Ti Lung, the majority of his classic swordsman films are wonderfully memorable. This one being one of those. This is a wierd plot, gender bending just to twist it up some more. Borderline ridiculous but teetering just so it doesn't lose the audience. Can I just say, impaling someone with your self-amputated arm is wicked cool to do to your enemy! |

Loved it in the theater!

This is an outstanding Shaw Brothers film. Chu Yuan's lavish and campy production values add to the fun. This style of martial arts film deserves more attention in the West than the chop-socky stuff that is usually lauded. Flowing swordplay, plot twists and elaborate sets characterize the collaborations between director Chu Yuan and novelist Gu Long. You can't go wrong with this combination. I would be curious to know what version the film reviewer Terrence Lee (above) saw. The Celestial Pictures DVDs tend to have very high standards. Was this a VCD version? I saw it in the theater at the last Golden Horse Film Festival with the original subtitles, which were quite good. On the other hand, Celestial Pictures DVD releases generally have a few problems in the subtitles. Nothing that will spoil the movie, but they may cause you to rewind once or twice. I wonder why they feel the need to retranslate subtitles when the originals are already adequate? |

Great classic
| Most of the early martial arts production, it is common to find a plot that lack enough substance and good story line. Usually we tend to forgive the thin story line for the great action sequence. Well, in this Di Lung's classic, Clan of the Intrigue has both a great story line and good action. That's why it is a great classic to own. Highly recommended! |

Classic Movie Censored!

This is an excellent classic movie with marvellous stars like movie queen Li Ching, Nora Miao, Betty Pei Ti, Ling Yun & Ti Lung. The pllot is great too. BUT 2 scenes are censored. The famous kiss between Nora & Betty is cut but then why show it in the soecial features section? It will only highlight the fact that this dvd is censored. The other scene is in the palace when the princess Betty is taking a bath in the pool. I have a video where you see the naked palace maids jumping into the pool. In the dvd, you see Ti Lung peeping but that brief scene is cut & if you listen carefully, you can hear the music abruptly cut too. This is very disappointing as many other bolder naked scenes in the 1st batches of Shaw releases are not cut. maybe Celestial is trying to avoid a Category 3 rating for their Shaw dvds! Aspect ratio is also wrong as Celestial has blocked off the original subtitles & so that portion of film at the bottom cannot be seen. Sometimes when an actor is sitting down, his face is chopped off around the mouth area. This is BAD! Celestial has also blocked off the top to give us a fake cinemascope so sometimes actors standing have their hair chopped off. This is UNPROFESSIONAL! |

Enjoyable dvd
| The movie is good, and so is the dvd. The color is simply 'i-chi-ban', except that the compression is occasionally visible, but it isn't a nuisance. Anyway, excellent calibration ! The sound of Cantonese version is clear, a better way to enjoy this movie digitally restored. Henceforth, I do have a choice, sweeping aside all the miserable dvds in my video library, SB movies will gradually fill my home cinema. There's always a time and a place for SB movies, it's great ! |

Clans Of Intrigue
| One of the memorable Ku Lung's movie by director Chu Yuen. Cast is great: Ti Lung, Li Ching, Yueh Hua... many Shaw Bros big stars appearing...Good plot, good act, good scenery... High recommended. |
