Clash of the Titans (US Version)

YesAsia Editorial Description

Full of pride, Cassiopeia compares her daughter's beauty to that of Hera. Angered, the queen of the gods has Poseidon unleash the monstrous beast Craken to destroy their village unless Cassiopeia's daughter, Andromeda, is sacrificed. Perseus, the son of Zeus, becomes enchanted with the breathtaking beauty and is determined to save her from this fate. The young hero, armed with a magical shield, a winged stallion and a mechanical owl, discovers the only way to defeat the monster is with the head of Medusa. The gods watch and intervene on Perseus' quest to save his beloved. This was legendary special effects wizard Ray Harryhausen's last film before he retired from creating movie magic. L.A. LAW's Harry Hamlin stars as the Greek mythological hero Perseus who fights snake-haired Medusa and two-headed dogs to save the lovely Andromeda (Judi Bowker). Laurence Olivier, as Zeus, is one of the many screen legends in this adventure. Burgess Meredith, Claire Bloom, Maggie Smith and Ursula Andress round out the cast as the Gods of Mount Olympus. Director Desmond Davis was camera operator on TOM JONES and A TASTE OF HONEY, two influential early 1960s British films. Writer Beverly Cross was one of the writers on 1963's Ray Harryhausen film, JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS.

A flight into fantasy
In a time when CGI effects are turning into the main ingredients of modern films, Clash of the Titans serves as a nice example of a solid palpable fantasy tale. Attracted to this early 80s movie because of my interest in classic Greek and Roman history, I also got an extra helping of action and adventure that stimulated my senses in a fantastic way.

Admittedly, the story of Clash of the Titans is as thin as ketchup on fries, but who needs a story in a film about Olympian gods and their haphazard way of dealing with the fate of humans? Interested more in wonders and thrills than in a fact-based lecture, I was dazzled by the film's main attraction, that is the fabulous creatures starting with Pegasus, a winged white mustang that gracefully soars through the skies at lightning speed.

Equally impressive are the characters that are up to no good including, of course, the legendary Medusa who may have never been portrayed better. She presents horror from head to toes, beginning with a hideous visage all the way to her characteristic lower body resembling a rattlesnake. Preying on her victims with a bow and arrows that never seem to miss their target and, of course, the petrifying stare of her eyes, this character is still one of movie history's meanest baddies in my books. The same holds true for the tale's harbinger of death, the Kraken, a sea creature of gigantic proportions that combines the looks of King Kong and Predator and seems to be asking for a few extra rounds with Godzilla. However, my personal favorite is still the super smart replica of Athena's pet owl Bubo, which is forged of steel, sounds like R2-D2, and flies through the idyllic setting like a stranger from Mars.

All things considered, Clash of the Titans may be worth your while if you are looking for a quick escape path into a spellbinding fantasy realm. Besides a fair amount of thrills and swashbuckling action, Laurence Rosenthal's magnificent music score serves as icing on the cake.
