YesAsia Editorial Description

Crying Out Love, in the Center of the World director Yukisada Isao waxes about love and life in his latest romantic blockbuster Closed Note. Based on a popular novel by Shizukui Shusuke, this heartwarming pure love story stars two of Japanese cinema's most popular and beautiful actresses, Sawajiri Erika (Pacchigi!) and Takeuchi Yuko (Be With You), along with charismatic actor Iseya Yuseke (Honey & Clover, What the Snow Brings). Following the parallel lives of two women on similar journeys, Closed Note takes a predictable premise and turns it into a quiet, moving, and rewarding film experience that celebrates the sweet moments of romance and the bittersweet turns of life.

When college student Kae (Sawajiri Erika) finds a diary left in her apartment by its previous tenant, she doesn't think too much of it, busy as she is with work, school, and a blooming relationship with artist Itoshibi (Iseya Yusuke). Leafing through the diary casually one day, Kae realizes that the writer, Ibuka (Takeuchi Yuko), is an elementary school teacher. An aspiring teacher herself, Kae takes an interest in Ibuka's diary entries, which share thoughts about her romance and struggles as a new teacher. As time passes and pages turn, Kae realizes that her own experiences in life and love are beginning to mirror that of Ibuka's.

Intensely romantic tale Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
In "Closed Note", Kae (Sawajiri Erika), who is studying to become an elementary school teacher (although she seems to spend no time whatsoever actually attending classes or doing any studying), moves into a new apartment and discovers there a diary left there by the previous tenant. Kae begins to read the diary and discovers that the diary coincidentally was written by a woman named Ibuka (Takeuchi Yuko) during her first year of teaching elementary school. As Kae reads the diary, we see the events described in the diary played out before us by Ibuka and her pupils. Kae draws important lessons from the wisdom that the diary imparts.

On the day she moves in, Kae noticed a long-haired man (Iseya Yusuke) staring at her window, then later encounters the man in the fountain pen shop where she works. She is drawn to the man and soon begins a friendship with him that, on her part, quickly becomes something deeper. The man, however, does not wholeheartedly return Kae's affections and Kae is bewildered by his hesitation ... until she learns the fateful connection between the woman in the diary and this long-haired man.

It is intriguing to watch the puzzle underlying this complex story unfold; the fine performances by the three lead actors all help to hold the audience's interest during the long unfolding process (the film runs for nearly 2 hours and 20 minutes). "Closed Note" lovingly depicts its milieu and features some gorgeous cinematography. Unfortunately, for me, the film's ending feels forced and manipulative; the story simply tries a bit too hard to bring the viewers to a tear-stained climax. Nonetheless, I can recommend the movie for all that comes before that overwrought ending.
