Closing Time (Japan Version - English Subtitles) DVD Region 2

The 1996 debut feature of director Kobayashi Masahiro (Bashing, Koroshi), Closing Time began the acclaimed career of a director who once made his living writing naughty "pink films". A self-professed fanatic of French cinema, Kobayashi's career is exceptional in that his acclaim is largely located outside his home country. While local Japanese audiences have never quite warmed to Kobayashi, his films consistently gain attention overseas at prestigious film festivals, especially the renowned Cannes Film Festival.

Closing Time was honored with the Grand Prix Award at the 1997 Yubari International Fantastic Film Festival, and tells the tale of an alcoholic writer (Shunsui Sansho) who hits rock-bottom on the streets of Tokyo. The writer works his way thorough a parade of drinks and young women, never stopping to reflect upon the state of his undesirable existence. Everything changes when he meets a gay homeless man (Kitamura Yashushi), who is dying of AIDS. Uncharacteristically, the writer cares for the dying man, and begins to question his sordid and ultimately wasted life.

This 2006 DVD edition of Closing Time features English subtitles, and comes with a 16 page booklet.
