Coal Miner's Daughter (25th Anniversay Edition) (US Version)

YesAsia Editorial Description

The story of Loretta Lynn, COAL MINER'S DAUGHTER charts the rise of the queen of country music from her upbringing in backwoods Appalachia to stardom at the Grand Ole Opry. One of eight children, she married at age 13 and was a mother of four at age 20. Shy and naive, she was pushed into music by her husband, Doolittle, who gave her a guitar instead of a ring for their wedding, in what was to be a career that also tracked her complicated relationship with this man. His strengths helped her create numerous hit singles, but his weaknesses inspired such immortal songs as "You Ain't Woman Enough to Take My Man." Sissy Spacek won an Oscar for her virtuoso performance, mimicking Lynn's voice nearly perfectly, while Beverly D'Angelo solidly impersonates Patsy Cline; unlike other music biographies, this film features both actors using their own voices in the singing scenes. Country music legend Ernest Tubb also makes a cameo. For director Michael Apted, COAL MINER'S DAUGHTER is one in a series of films--AGATHA, GORILLAS IN THE MIST, and NELL--he has made about strong, eccentric women.

"...A thoughtful, endearing film....Both Spacek and D'Angelo deserve a special nod of credit for doing all of their own singing with style and accuracy..." - Berg. (Variety Film Critic), Variety, 02/20/1980

"...Four extraordinary performances....Spacek is luminous..." - Janet, Maslin (New York Times Critic), New York Times, 03/07/1980

Memories of a Coal Miner's Daughter
Coal Miner's Daughter takes the viewers on the long and winding success story of Loretta Lynn. Michael Apted's autobiographic film retells Loretta Lynn's gradual rise from the status of a coal miner's daughter to her career as award-winning singer-songwriter. Sissy Spacek slips into her role as the second and dearest-loved member of the Webb family. Doolittle Lynn (Tommy Lee Jones) who tries to flee the bleak future of becoming a coal miner marries Loretta at the age of thirteen and later presents her with a guitar that changes her whole life.

The film is elevated by the standout acting performances, especially by leads Jones and Spacek, who also sings all of her songs. They successfully breathe life into the singer-manager couple on their way to the prestigious Grand Ole Opry and the top of the country music charts. However, it is less the fame and the glitter that Loretta Lynn earned as the new first lady of country music, but rather the ups and downs she and her family had to cope with that are in the foreground of this film. Among the signature songs that can be heard in the movie are You're Not Woman Enough (To Take My Man) and Don't Come Home A Drinkin' (With Lovin' On Your Mind), which are direct comments on marital problems Lynn had to face with her husband. Other songs featured in the film include the satirical One's on the Way, Loretta's ode to nature You're looking At Country, and her original Fist City. Filmgoers are also likely to recall the nostalgic Patsy Cline songs There He Goes, Sweet Dreams (Of You), and Crazy that can be heard during the passage that recalls the enduring relationship between Loretta and her mentor friend. Finally, Lynn's autobiographic titular song Coal Miner's Daughter rounds everything off, recalling the good times and the bad time's she shared with her family in the Kentucky coal mining town of Butcher Holler.
