YesAsia Editorial Description

Andy Lau is, without a doubt, one of the most hard working artists in Hong Kong right now, this year it seems like he is unstoppable. With a highly anticipated concert this coming September at the Hong Kong Coliseum which promises innovative show-stopping magic, here is a new Cantonese album released to compliment the event.

You might have heard the opening track featured in the new Tao Ti Green Tea advertisement campaign and the new single masseuse, this album also includes a new Mandarin track recorded for a Community Chest campaign. Coffee and Tea is certainly long overdue, but with any Andy Lau record, expect to be surprised by its range and his personal style.

This strictly limited edition includes a bonus VCD which includes music videos for his two new singles.

Long Time No Album: Coffee or Tea ~ Andy Lau

Andy Lau, namely the most hardworking singer in Hong Kong, has finally released his latest Cantonese album - Coffee or Tea - though a dispute with his previous record company has delayed the plan for over a year. A total of 10 Cantonese and 1 Mandarin new songs are presented in the brand new album.

The Canto-pop king has been telling stories about life, nature and destiny in his songs and movies for several years. Coffee or Tea is of no exception. Meanwhile, ballads, the answer to success in the Chinese musical industry, are no way to be missed out. In general, the differences from the previous are that there are more delicate descriptions of people while rhythms in the new album are not particularly outstanding.

The back-to-basic rhythms in Coffee Or Tea (Track#1) might be the lone exception. The impressively catchy rhythms join hands with the philosophical and meaningful lyrics to propel the principal track to top and rock every local radio hits chart. It is undoubtedly a successful commercial theme song.

The present reviewer cannot resist falling in love with Masseuse (Track#2), the second leading track, at the first sight of the lyrics which describe the life of the small potatoes despite its chorus being over-encouraging and therefore a bit weird. The present reviewer is always fond of this type of songs written by Lin Xi, just like A Guai, an Eason Chan's piece two years ago.

If Something Happens To Me (Track#3) is a decent ballad with well-written music and lyrics and emotional performance from Andy Lau.

As for the others, Don't Worry (Track#8), Taxi Driver (Track#7) and Marlon Brando (Track#5) worths sparing your time listening to. However, Devil In Love (Track#10), similar to Back To The Future and Ice That Wouldn't Melt some eight years ago, is kind of old hat and probably the greatest flaw in the album.

Recommendations: Masseuse (Track#2), If Something Happens To Me (Track#3) and Don't Worry (Track#8)

~Overall nice ballads~ Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Most of the songs are nice ballads. Track 2 is pleasant. Track 1 has a older nostalgia which is nice. Track 10 is great for those who like upbeat rock. I'm pleased with the album knowing it's very rare to enjoy most of the album of every other artist. I say this is more notable of his newer albums. I definetly recommend this to anyone who like ballads that doesn't get too retro or new such as other artists. His music is more consistent in style that doesn't leave one thinking if each album is good or total flop. I think he stays true to what he likes more than go trendy all the time and lose listeners. This is on the lighter side of instruments than some of his music with the heavy beat such as "Chinese People." I think he has the voice to sing the songs with the heavier beats and tunes. I give it more of 8-9 for the album. Life is romantic and he's good at singing the romance of life.

5 star superstar Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This album will make a great gift even if the person don't understand the language or heard of Andy Lau! Having not hearing from any of his new release for quite awhile, it caught my attention again when I was in a chinese candy store. I asked the workers there who's the singer? I didn't think it could possibly be Andy! But it is so, this new album is totally different from what you think you're gonna get yourself into, only this time, it can only get Better.

One thing I like about this album is, it's instruments combined with andy's vocal can calm down your day or sooth away your stress....at time's, really relaxing easy going.

I've never done review's on anything that I buy. This is my 1st. Give it a try, and I'm sure you'll enjoy it!
