Among the most remarkable stories of resilience in the annals of World War II are those documented from behind the impenetrable walls of the notoriou s German POW camp Colditz. It is a medieval castle located outside Leipzig in Germany. With more guards than prisoners, it is believed to be the most escape-proof prison ever conceived. British soldier Jack Rose (Tom Hardy) is taken hostage in Colditz suring the war and thus is kept apart from his lover, Lizzie Carter (Sophia Myles). Jack Rose and other prisoners form an escape team , among them there are tunnel masters, lockpickers, tailors, artists, and engineers who are all determined to forge their way out of the solid-rock battlement any way they can. One of Jack's friends, Nick McGrade (Damien Lewis), has already fled to freedom and made a seemingly selfess vow to locate Lizzie and keep her from harm. Yet when McGrade finally meets her, he is so fascinated by her beauty. As infatuation turns to obsession, McGrade is determined to claim her as his own that he forgets all of his vow and loyalty to his buddy. His first betrayal - have all of Jack's intimate correspondence from Colditz redirected to him. The second and most irreparable treason is to have Jack declared dead. His shocking deceit is only the beginning of a breathless match of ingenuity, wits, and daring between friends and enemies, lovers and strangers, and scaptives and captors, unfolding as one of the greatest adaventures of remarkable courage, astonishing guile, and undying love ever told.
