Professional Review of "Colour of The Truth"
This professional review refers to Colour of The Truth (US Version)
|
It is undeniable that the production "Colour of the Truth" is under the huge influence of "Internal Affairs" (2002). In terms of the filming techniques, the characterization and even the theme, the directors Wong Jing and Mai Zi-shan actually are making direct responses to the work of Liu Wei-qiang and Mai Zhao-hui in "Internal Affairs" but in a contrastive way. Despite the similarity that both movies used films of coarse particles, "Colour of the Truth" is more back to the basic in comparison with the more daring approach taken in "Internal Affairs". One of the many elements why "Internal Affairs" is so impressive is the few number of action scenes. For instance, one scene where a drug deal is involved is still appealingly exciting without one shot exchange. On the other hand, "Colour of the Truth" is more like the typical action-packed movie with the cat-and-mouse plot as the whole movie starts off with an gunrunning action scene triggered by Ke Le's one accidental gunfire. The two movies also differ in terms of their themes. The one in "Internal Affairs" is a Hobson's choice. For instance, the undercover played by Chen Yong-ren dies as a triad member but never a police officer whilst the character played by Liu Jian-ming can barely keep his life (in the Hongkong version). In "Colour of the Truth", on the other hand, four father-and-son or father-and-daughter relationships (between Huang Jiang and his father, between Qi Xi and Ke Le, between Mang Chao and Jordan Chan, between Patrick Tse-Yin and Gillian Chung )are explored to discuss the many possibilities of making choices. Officer Huang, whose background can be traced back to "Internal Affairs", represents the thought of people in the older generation that things do not always go in our way and we have no choices but accept the reality. Taking care of his father who has suffered from two-time apoplexy and paralysis from head to toe makes him once tell Ke Le, "We, as sons, makes no decisions but follow what our parents have prepared for us". Ke Le and the characters played by Jordan Chan and Gillian Chung, on the other hand, represent the people in the younger generation that they believe they are the boss of their own to decide whether to support their fathers or not. It can be seen that the screenwriter stands more on this side as the last shot of brightness carries the message of a future full of possibilities. The key difference, therefore, between the two movies is that "Internal Affairs" is relatively negative whilst "Colour of the Truth" is more positive. One scene that deserves credits in the movie is the three-and-a-half-minute rooftop confrontation among Anthony Wong, Sean Lau and Francis Ng Chan-yue. It is impressive to have found Anthony Wong be one of the leading roles in the movie. The character Huang Jiang he plays must be a revival of his playing Officer Wong in "Internal Affairs" but I believe that we can still find something of the "foe that killed someone's father" in the movie ''Just One Look" in the character of Huang Jiang. Of course I think he has already done a very good job in "Internal Affairs" but it is actually not a difficult role to play at all. This time in "Colour of the Truth", however, there is a task of more challenges for him to perform as the father and so he can indeed have outdone his role in "Internal Affairs". "Colour of the Truth" is overall a surprising movie with outstanding ideas and messages in spite of the a few unreasonable plots and some characters that are too good to be left undeveloped. Nevertheless the publicity of this movie gives us too much an impression that it is just another version of "Internal Affairs", which is enough to drive some viewers away. Outstanding Casts: Anthony Wong Chau-sang, Wong Hiu-yin, Francis Ng Chan-yue, Sean Lau Ching-wan Reviewed by manny468 at Cinespot.com |

If you want a solid action film, here it is! I was kind of upset that Gillian had such a small role, but that's ok, she has time to improve her acting. It was a great movie! Anthony Wong and Raymond Wong were awesome, and for a very short time, Lau Ching Wan was pretty good too! What was funny was Nicholas's dad, Patrick Tse, being the villain... haha. Great movie! |

I think this was just a poor attempt to match/follow up on Internal Affairs. They've tried to hard on getting the story right and should've kept it simpler. |

this movie lacks star quality from infernal affairs and suffers from some wooden acting from all the cast, the story tries to make too many twists and ends up in too many knots. Overall, its not an infernal affairs and isn't as good as heroic duo.. |

This movie missed something. The story is okay, the actors did well too. The problem of this movie is: who is the main character. It's unfair just saying Anthony or Jordan is the main character. The others (like Raymond) did play an important role too. Maybe that is the weakness of this film. Also missing (???) on the cover of this vcd/dvd Francis Ng. |
