It's Christmas Eve, 1902, but the Civil War still echoes in the drunken mind of Soll Gautier (Robert Duvall), the crotchety owner of an 8,000 acre plantation. Witnessing the transience of life is 13-year-old Horace Robedaux (Lukas Haas), whose widowed mother discarded him at the plantation. He observes the reclusive white man's reversion to dust, the local blacks who still seek dignity 40 years after emancipation, and a death unlamented because the life before it was so loveless and detached. Soll is buried Christmas morning on the land he worked all his days. He wanted no hymns, no prayers and no family at his funeral. Horace is not to get his money. The convicts are not to get their freedom. No one is bequeathed the land. Only Soll has, at last, been released.
