During the Korean War, Mun Ok (Choi Eun Hee) flees to the south and becomes the mistress of a married man in order to support her family. While running a cafe, she meets and falls in love with composer Sang Kyu, who is also married. Mun Ok loses everything when the affair is discovered, but she is able to start a new life with Sang Kyu, running a record shop together. When Sang Kyu's sick wife passes away, however, guilt drives him to leave Mun Ok as well.

Produced by Shin Sang Ok and directed by Lee Kang Cheon (Piagol), the 1962 feature Cool and Cold (a.k.a. Mujeong) is based on the tumultuous life of Park Yeong Chae, the daughter of a famous freedom fighter of the colonial period. The film documents one woman's journey of love, survival, and self-awakening in postwar Korea.

줄거리
1ㆍ4후퇴 때 피난을 온 문옥(최은희)은 보석상 길사장(이예춘)의 정부로, 그가 마련해준 집과 다방을 운영하며, 홀어머니와 전쟁 중 부상으로 한 쪽 다리를 못쓰게 된 오빠, 그리고 고등학생 여동생을 부양하며 살아간다. 그녀는 어느날 길사장과 해운대로 여행을 가서 작곡가 강상규(이상규)를 만나게 된다. 문옥을 처음 본 순간 사랑하게 된 상규는 병든 아내와 아직 어린 딸을 둔 한 집안의 가장이다. 상규가 문옥이 운영하는 다방에 자주 드나들면서 두 사람은 연인 관계로 발전하고, 이 사실을 알게 된 길사장은 문옥에게 주었던 모든 것을 빼앗는다. 문옥은 상규의 도움으로 다시 레코드가게를 운영하게 되고, 상규의 병든 아내는 죽는다. 상규는 아내를 속이며 문옥을 사랑한 것에 대해 죄책감을 느끼며 문옥과 헤어진다. 문옥은 이제까지 다른 사람의 도움으로 살아온 자신을 반성하며 스스로 살아갈 것을 다짐한다.
