Thirty years after graduation, a man and a woman meet again at an alumni reunion. They are no longer young, but the moment she sees him, memories of her first love are revived. Her love for him has never faded even though she married another man and bore his child. What has kept her going is a white shell the boy gave her and a phrase of Jean Cocteau's poem, "My ears are shells, fondly hearing the sound of the sea..." She gets a divorce, returns to her hometown and opens a snack bar named "Coquille," which means "shell." Without their knowing, an unexpected turn of events awaits the two...

A very satisfying film Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
I enjoyed this film tremendously, and wholeheartedly concur with Mr. Kennedy's review.

I especially enjoyed the performance of Fubuki Jun, this being only the second of her films I've seen, following her fine role in the later television drama, Satorare. I find her a fine, nuanced actress, and found her character in this film very sympathetic, in spite of the adultery referenced by Mr Kennedy. I wish more of her films were available, especially with English subtitles. I look forward to someday enjoying more of her work.

Likewise, I enjoyed Kobayashi Kaoru, though his performance was more muted than Jun's. It seemed to fit his character, however.

For those interested, the English subtitles are excellent, and though the DVD indicates it is Region 3 (as does the Yesasia description), it plays with no problem on my two Region 1 DVD players.

The ties that bind Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
In "Coquille" a middle-aged man and woman meet again at their class reunion. The man barely remembers the woman from those long-ago school days, but it immediately is clear that the woman always has held onto her strong feelings for the man.

The man has sailed through a relatively easy life. He is a respected manager in a big company, has a successful arranged marriage to a beautiful and kind-hearted wife, and has two good-looking teen-aged children. The woman, on the other hand, has had it rough. She married a man who left her when their only child was born. He left her with a mountain of debts. After struggling to pay off those debts in Tokyo, the woman has returned to her hometown to run a bar.

Although she knows the man is married, the woman pursues the man and, in spite of his happy marriage, the man is drawn to the woman. Will the man cheat on his wife? Will he destroy his marriage?

In the end, "Coquille" is a contemplation of "what might have been", what relationship might have developed between the man and woman if they had become closer when they were in school. I was disturbed by the film's casual handling of adultery, but enjoyed the fine performances by its two leads. The movie feels a bit manipulative, but I can recommend it for the honesty with which it handles the emotions of the central characters.
