Professional Review of "Crazy First Love"

January 8, 2004

This professional review refers to Crazy First Love (Hong Kong Version)
"Crazy First Love"- Let's Get Crazy In Love!

Tae-il (Cha Tae-hyun) has been recognized as one problematic student at Busan High school, which however also draws much attention on him. Ever since he was a kid, his ultimate goal has been to marry his childhood sweetheart Il-mae (Son Yae-jin). One big obstacle he always has to face during his attempts to approach the love of his life is Il-mae's overprotective father Young-dae (Yoo Dong-geun). In order to turn Tae-il into the best son-in-law ever, Young-dae keeps requesting this young man who originally ranked 300,000 as a high student in Korea to pass one test after another. Having made the biggest progress in his life to become No.3000, Tae-il is again put to the test to get himself into the Law School of Seoul National University. At the time while Tae-il buries his nose into books, he does not forget to protect his first love by driving all of Il-mae's admirers away. This young lady, however, dies for love and has no option but seduce this lawyer-to-be bookworm. Despite her attractive moves, her mission is in vain due to Tae-il's intolerable self-constraint. When both of them have graduated from university, Tae-il's study journey has yet to be completed as he now has to sit for the bar examination to become a licensed lawyer and Il-mae is then employed to work at a big firm. The big day finally comes as Tae-il has passed his exam and Young-dae allows him to marry his only daughter! But now it is Il-mae who says no because she has already been engaged to her wealthy young boss. Nearly being torn apart by this shocking news, Tae-il never gives up on his only dream and motivation in his life and sets his heart to win his first love back.

Cha Tae-hyun Did It Again!

The chemistry between Cha Tae-hyun and Son Yae-jin has already sparkled in "Lover's Concerto". This time they collaborate again and not surprisingly it did not take much time for "Crazy First Love" to become a blockbuster in Korea. When the "My Sassy Girl" perfect boyfriend meets the "The Classic" innocent girl-next-door, "Crazy First Love" is literally about the first love that the single-minded Tae-il has to crazily defend. Actually before the opening of this movie, Cha Tae-hyun has topped the chart by 30.3% in a survey aimed to find out who is the most potential and desirable Korean star to play a role of a romantic but unrestrained lover.

Without the look of a classic hunk, Cha Tae-hyun, with his acting and singing talents, has had to work really hard until he finally made it into the A-List in Korea. Born in 1976, Cha Tae-hyun has long started his acting career unnoticed and most of his early works were television dramas such as "The First Love", "Beautiful Sunlight", "Sunflower" and "Boyfriend (Juliet's Man)". In 1997 Cha made his first big break in his debut movie "Hallelujah" which won him a victory over Won Bin and the Best Male New Comer Award. His comic talent is once again revealed in "Crazy First Love". In order to make a huge impression, Cha adds an extra comic touch by wearing an Afro wig in the movie. The wig soon became a trademark of Cha and he has even worn it during the movie press conference causing everyone to explode into laughter. In the film he also speaks the Busan dialect intending to make his character more hilarious. It is however a pity that there are not many people who can understand the dialect and so the lines where the Busan dialect is used had to be subtitled. With the king of comedy in the house, "Crazy First Love" would never have become such a hit without the participation of the upcoming queen of romance Son Yae-jin. After making an impressive couple in "Lover's Concerto", these two stars agreed to work together again shortly after reading the story of this movie.

Weird and Funny... Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
This movie was funny in such a weird way. The way Cha Tae-Hyun expressed his love for Son Ye-Jin in the movie was a bit over exaggerated and funny at the same time. I bought the VCD version of this movie because I'm a BIG Son Ye-Jin fan. I prefer the "The Classic" 10 times more than this one. The acting was good but the storyline could've been written better i think. Overall i think it's good to watch if you don't have anything else on hand.

Good story, bad presentation Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
The consequence of having starred in a brilliant movie that earned blockbuster status (read: My Sassy Girl) is that your next movies for review are placed under closer scrutiny. One can't help but compare. Such is the fate of Cha Tae-hyeon.

So, the movie. Admittedly, it has a good plot and had the makings of a romcom drama that could equal, say, My Sassy Girl. In fact, given the right touches, it could even be more poignant and more funny than My Sassy Girl.

Here's the story. Tae-il has one ambition in life - to marry his childhood love, Il-mae (Son Ye-jin). Sadly, that is his ONLY ambition. He doesn't care much for school and is constantly on a war path. Il-mae's dad, who happens to be Tae-il's homeroom teacher, believes that there's more to Tae-il than the latter would admit. So he offers a proposition - Il-mae's hand in marriage if Tae-il would raise his rank from No. 300,000 to No. 3,000. Tae-il impressively rises to the challenge. The dad takes it a bit further - finish law school. Tae-il accomplishes this, at Seoul National University, no less. And while Tae-il is busy making himself the impressive son-in-law, he still finds time to protect Il-mae from her countless admirers, and from himself. D-day comes when Tae-il passes his bar exams and the dad finally allows him to marry Il-mae. Problem is, Il-mae is already engaged to a wealthy womanizer. Heartbroken, Tae-il now has a new mission in life - to win his first love back.

A good storyline, but a mediocre presentation. Once again, the people behind the movie made the common mistake of magnifying everything so the movie will be something it's not. I'm talking particularly of the comedy. It's disappointing really, the way Cha Tae-hyeon portrayed his Tae-il role considering the natural ease with which he portrayed Gyun-woo in My Sassy Girl. There was too much shouting, and granted that they utilized the Busan dialect, did he have to sound so...Japanese? A lot of potentially funny scenes were wasted because they weren't presented right. A pity, considering that there were naturally funny clips far and in between. The drama was somewhat butchered due to the confusing story surrounding Il-mae. It felt like the scriptwriter lost track of his own narrative. I ended up being baffled in a scene that calls for sympathy. Again, a pity, considering that this movie had strong drama potential.

Strange... Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
I found this movie to be very strange. The first half of the movie was compltely ridiculous... not entirely in a bad way, but there was lots of partial nudity and really awkward conversation topics. The comedy was very silly and over-the-top, and the characters relationships were established on the same obscure surface.

But then... the last half of the movie gets really deep into the whole melodrama. It phases out of the comedy [relatively] slowly and gets more and more serious (so its not as shocking as the brick wall that Sex is Zero gave). While the two halfs of the movie work well in their own ways, I find is strange to think that they are still the same movie. It's like, the first half was so crazy that the second half needed to make up for it by developing the characters a lot and attempting to tug at our heartstrings. It's really cliche, but not to the point where I couldn't enjoy it to an extent.

I felt that all the actors did a great job. Cha Tae-Hyun was a little over dramatic, but that's just his character. Son Yae-Jin was very beautiful in this movie even though her character was a little shallow till the last half.

Bottom Line: Ridiculous and touching in a way that makes you wonder why you're feeling anything at all because its so ridiculous. It is an entertaining movie worth seeing once through maybe, but all the lead actors in this movie have made MUCH better films. "Lover's Concerto" comes to mind...

Great Comedy Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I have seen a lot of Cha Tae Hyun movie as i am an avid fan but this movie is really very very very hilarious from the beginning to the end. Now that i am reviewing it, i wanted to watch it again.

Its a story of a boy turn to teenager to a man who's only love is a girl he grew up with. Taking all the challenges with a promise that at a proper time, he will be able to marry the girl...

Although the girl is very sick, the scripter writer made a happy ending, the man not giving up on the girl by studying medicine again to find a cure for the desease. Don't fail to watch this film.

Crazy First Love Customer Review Rated Bad 5 - 5 out of 10
This movie is absolutely a reflection of its title. The plot is over the top and just not believable, even under the premise of a movie. Likewise, the acting appears forced and again, over the top. There are more enjoyable things I'd do instead of watching this movie.
